Just today alone I saw a friend on Facebook upset because her four month old started sucking his thumb. Another friend posted a pic of her daughter and said "this is the face I get when I keep pulling her thumb out of her mouth because thumb sucking is a no-no".
Just curious, why is thumb sucking a bad thing? This is new to me. I feel so ignorant to these things lol
I personally just think it's unsanitary. You go around touching stuff then put your dirty hands in your mouth or vice versa. It's just nasty .
My first daughter liked to suck her thumb. So we gave her a pacifier. I took it away by her 1st birthday. She doesn't have teeth issues. Here are nice and straight. Also she never sucked her thumb after the fact
Oh wow. Makes total sense now. Thanks for the info ladies! Guess my little Riley Jean won't be doing that either! Lol
Along with the teeth problems it can cause, it's really bad for the skin in the long run. My cousin sucked her thumb and it would get really raw and irritated constantly. She would get infections on her hands because of it and she was 4!
messes up their teeth, hard to break the habit as the thumb is always there, and it's a habit that can be carried on all thru life. my cousin is 50 years old and still constantly sucks his thumb. he looks dumb as hell. and my little sister in law is cute, She's 8, but it drives me wild to see her suck her thumb. on top of it all think about how many things you touch thru out the day. kids don't wash their hands much. all those germs and yuckies are getting put in their mouth. it's better to use a pacifier because at least you can take those away, you can't chop off a kids thumb lol
it's so bad for there teeth! I know a girl who's daughter is almost 3, and still has a pacy and sucks her thumb and her teeth are in a triangle shape (if that makes sense) and it's awful! but she refuses to take that pacy away from her.. also my moms baby sister sucked her thumb so long that her teeth are the same way and she now has braces so I don't think letting them suck there thumb too long or letting them have pacys too long is a good thing but that's just my opinion.
I don't think it's bad (my opinion) only because my babies doctor told me it's a comfort thing.
Because it's not something a parent can take away, like s pacifier. But it's just the way the baby soothes him/herself I don't see s big deal with it. But parents don't like it because it can cause teeth issues
My sister used to suck her thumb and now has a horrible overbite and her thumbs skin now looks like eczema took over.
I don't see the big deal with it...it's no different than a paci, in my opinion.
teeth issues, it took me the longest to break that habit and I want braces... my BFF sucked her thumb nail off. fine another soothing method... it became a security/soothing thing for me.. especially during high stress. I wish I had something else growing up to use instead
