my dr did it on her own cause just as it tells you the gender of the baby, the blood work shows any abnormalities or if anything is possibly wrong genetically. you should ask if your dr doesn't do it on her own.
masshealth or medicaid will pay for it. you do not have to pay out of pocket for it. I was 11 weeks when I got the test done and I really don't think it's something you should wait until birth to find out. it tests for more than just down syndrome. it tests for other chromosomal abnormalities like spinal bifader (spelling)? highly suggest the test. plus you get to find out the gender earlier. I found out at 13 weeks. super exciting.
I don't remember how many weeks I was when I got my blood work done to find out the gender, just that it was before my 20 week check up when they do the Anatomy ultra sound. Medicaid covered it for me.
I'm in Medicaid and My doctor did a blood test at my 16 week appointment and they asked me if I wanted to find out the gender as well through the blood work.
my advice is just wait.until they are born...it's ALOT cheaper . those blood tests are 2k and up and you pay for it out of pocket...its nerve wrecking but.. its something you just have to deal with
