oh you'll know lol.
they'll get really full feeling. if you squeeze your nipples a drop won't come out, you'll have milk squirt across the room lol. it usually happens in about 3-5 days, sometimes a week. but even if your milk isn't in yet your baby still gets plenty to eat. colostrum is very filling to their tiny stomachs.

Oh alright, thanks for letting me know this

Not to intrude on your post but I was wondering the same thing. And @crunchymomma does it take more efforts for the baby to get the colostrum out since there isn't as much of it as the milk that comes in a few days after birth? Just wondering if nursing before the milk comes in will hurt more than it will afterwards

@emkasting, no not at all. it should only hurt if the baby isn't latched right, and you'll most likely (but possibly not) get split nipples in the 1st 2 weeks. just get a good lanolin free nipple Balm (contrary to what a EVERYONE suggests, lanolin is not good for split nipples, makes them worse) and nurse through it. it'll get better. it's how your nipples get calloused so they can withstand nursing. a newborns stomach is literally the size of a cherry, so the tiny bit of colostrum is more than enough to fill them up so they don't have to work any harder for colostrum than they should milk.

Oh okay, thank you so much! Hearing about split nipples scares me, I mean I have super sensitive boobs/nipples normally so I'm pretty nervous about what kind of toll breastfeeding will take on them, but I'm determined to work through it for my baby's sake. Have you ever used nipple shields? If you could message me that'd be great, I just don't wanna blow up a post that isn't mine with questions lol @crunchymomma

I have been EBF for 3 weeks and yet to have nipple cracking or soreness. It isn't impossible. Just don't be afraid to make sure the latch is correct ask for help if you need it
