Recently out of emotionally abusive relationship with my unborn baby's father. Many people tell me I need to go after him for child support but I have mixed feelings. He has said mean things about my baby and that he doesn't want her. He also is currently unemployed and can't hold jobs for long, uses drugs etc. so I don't think he would cooperate or be able to send any support anyway. It would just make him more angry and abusive towards me and my little girl if I did.
Can any other single moms relate? Do you choose not to go after your baby's dad so he can't bother you anymore?

if you file for child support they will automatically take money from his checks... if he's not working, after a certain amount of time, they'll throw him in jail. He will have rights over her as a father but if you let the court know that he was abusive& can prove it or just let them know you fear for your child's safety then if he does choose to see her you can request supervised visitations. Which will only be for a few hours every other Saturday. That's what I was told by the court when I filed for my oldest daughter 3 yrs ago. If you need the help financially I say you should definitely file. But I'm going to be very honest, it is a dreadful process. At the end of the day you need to do what's right for your child. Good luck honey! it's not easy but it'll get better!

He might have a change of heart when she's here. Babies change people . My baby's father was very ignorant towards me but after her seen her in the ultrasound just moving and feeling the little flutters , he got his shit together. Give it time ,

Also, as long as he has rights to his baby, which he still can even if he doesn't sign the birth certificate, he could pop up whenever. I would speak to a lawyer (there's many that will provide free consultations) and explain your situation

In Texas even if you are unemployed you have to pay something Which forces the other to get a job or it goes as back child support and accrues interest. My boyfriend has a son with another women (loooong story), and pays her monthly as well as owes her back pay. If he refuses to cooperate and show up to court, the state can automatically rule in your favor and set his monthly payment that he will be responsible for immediately

Girl I'm in the same situation. But I made up my mind a long time ago that no, I will not be going after him for child support, nor will he be signing the birth certificate. Both of which entitle him to visitation and I am not comfortable with that.
