Here in MO where I am the Highway patrol is certified to inspect carseat. They even offer free carseat to those less fortunate! If they weren't certified they wouldn't be the ones at the hospital making sure the baby is properly restrained and the seat installed correctly before letting patents leave with newborns!

@dennisbaby, blankets and such that do not go between the child and the car seat and/or straps and are safe to use in a car seat. It's when items are used between the baby and the car seat or between the baby and the straps that there can be a safety issue. "Shower cap" style car seat covers are also okay to use, because again they do not jeopardize the belt path and aren't between baby and the car seat.

@ilyric, my carseat is really wide and the highway patrol told me to get one for my seat to make it safe to transport baby!

so @ilyric your telling me since these aren't safe should we not put blankets on our babies while in the carseat or hats or anything like that because the risk of suffocation or something because it wasn't carseat technician certified. because all those things go in the carseat to keep warm and everything. should we not use carseat covers or anything. have a great day

@dennisbaby I would do the same thing I'm doing for you give them a link tell them what is safe and what isn't. if you care not to educate yourself on your child seat heat then in my eyes I think you are bad parent. but I'm done now you have the sources do what you will with them. @blondieenj I'm sorry this all happened on your post but carseat safety is a big pet peeve of mine and I think that everyone has their kids safe

@dennisbaby, no, just not educated in car seat safety. .. now if you know all the risks and still proceed to put your child at risk, yes... an undeserving parent.

Cigarettes aren't safe and they're sold, they're sold for PROFIT. @dennisbaby This is why car seat manuals state to NOT use after market products.

and I'm sure if it was unsafe they wouldn't sell them for carseats either

@dennisbaby, doctors and nurses are not certified car seat technicians in most instances and don't necessarily know what came with each car seat. It's best to get car seat safety questions answered by a certified technician.

Dr's aren't certified car seat techs either, I stay up to date on car seat safety as my children are my precious cargo. :) @dennisbaby

@dennisbaby for all you know she is carseat certified. and like I mentioned not all nurses are carseat certified or doctors if you want to put your child in the carseat in improperly and risk things that's your own prerogative so please do not give out false information. @ilyric @kmally and myself are giving correct information and helping @blhave her child in her carseat safely.

@dennisbaby, please stop using the line "my kids used it and they're fine" line... that is just a cover up of the situation. It's not safe means it's not safe. Just like feeding babies solids before 6 mths. Why risk your child's safety in the first place? JS.

okay well all five of my kids had this and was perfectly fine.

Anything that did not come with that car seat has not been safety tested and is not made of fire retardant material. In most cases it can also void the warranty of your car seat and can jeopardize your child's safety because it affects the belt path. Use the car seat as is from the manufacturer. @killxj0y @dennisbaby

Car seat safety is if it didn't come with the car seat or isn't sold for your car seat through the manufacturer itself, it is not safe to use as it was not crash tested with the seat itself to insure your child's safety. Also extra padding can cause breathing issues with the baby. if baby needs the extra support after being born and put in the car seat, the safest route is to use rolled up receiving blankets. If you're interested in more beneficial car seat safety tips, I can point you to a group/website that better explains everything! :)
