Congrats to all the new mommies! I've seen a lot of mommies had babies in the past few days 😱😍 If anyone is trying and struggling to breastfeed, keep this in mind. Babies, newborns especially, often "cluster feed", which is a term to describe a constant need to nurse, every two hours, one hour, or even more often than that. You may be thinking, "what if I'm not producing enough?? My baby is starving!" but before you self diagnose with low supply, keep in mind that in the early weeks your baby's tummy is sooo small! The colotrum provided in the first days is high in nutrients and PLENTY to fill baby's belly, and they must eat often not only because they digest it quickly and become hungry, but also to signal your breasts to produce more and more for baby! Breast milk is supply on demand, so the more baby stimulates your breasts and empties them, the more they get the hint, "baby needs more!" Somewhere in the first 2 to 5 days, your milk will "come in", and change from the thick, yellowish-clear colostrum to more yellow colored and eventually a whiter, kinda blueish (sometimes) tint of milk. At this point, the weight that your baby lost in the first few days (which is completely normal) which start to go up again, and in the first 2 weeks it should be back to birth weight and keep gaining from there. After your milk is in, you may feel "engorged", this is because your body doesn't know how much baby needs yet and so it over compensates and produces a lot at once. This will settle down around the 6 week mark, and you shouldn't feel engored anymore unless you go long stretches without nursing. Just remember a few things about supply: pumping does NOT indicate how much you're producing, because the baby is MUCH more efficient at extracting milk than any pump. Some moms don't even get an ounce from pumping but can feed their baby just fine at the breast! The best way to tell if baby is getting enough, is counting diapers, the baby should be peeing at least 5 or 6 times a day, and gaining weight appropriately at check ups. Each baby is different, as long as they are consistently growing, they should be doing fine 😊 also know that because of the rapid growth and development they go through in the first few months, they will often change their feeding schedules, cluster feed on and off, and may be grumpy at the breast (especially in evenings), or even go on a nursing "strike" where they seem to not want to nurse. Persistence and patience is key, it is very rare for a baby to self wean before the first year of life. They are just going through something developmentally or aren't feeling good, as long as they're still getting enough to pee regularly then you're doing great! Breastfeeding is hard, and doesn't work out for everyone and that is fine, formula is a blessing for that reason, but when it does work out it's a beautiful thing and it makes me feel so proud to breastfeed my girl for 6 whole months now! If anyone has any questions about breastfeeding, please don't hesitate to message me, and I will try and answer your questions as best as I can 😊

If it makes you feel any better, despite my troubles about my daughter's gas and spit up, she gained an average of 2 1/2 pounds in the first two months when my supply was really high lol she went from birth weight of 7.7lbs, lost 9% of that in the first couple days (which is normal), then agained it back and was 12lbs by 2 months!

Lmao I know, my tits get so big and hard they HURT, but I was able to get him to latch on for about 30min last night, so I hope it continues...I was curious about hindmilk because they are both a little gassy...I just don't want them losing too much weight before their Dr's appointment.

I just realized you have twins...this is a slightly more unique situation in the fact that each baby can help to empty your breasts....once they begin eating more, you should have no problems getting them to empty you breasts and keep your supply up! 5 day is still pretty young, so give them time and they will definitely pick up more...it's hard to breastfeed twins from what I hear, but completely achievable! Just make sure to rotate them on breasts so each baby gets both boobs, they will likely suck different amounts so you wanna keep things even lol

That I'm unsure of, but usually if you feel like your breast is getting soft again, then baby should be down to the hindmilk....just thought of this also, you could try pumping or expressing just a little bit before a feed to get baby to the hind milk quicker! As long as they're getting some of that foremilk as well for water intake 😉 @tahtahme

How long typically until the hindmilk during a feeding, do you know?

Also I should warn, in the early weeks my girl was throwing up and had bad gas....after lots of research I found out this was because I was over producing and she was drinking a lot of the watery foremilk and not getting enough of the thicker hindmilk at each feed....I started feeding her on only one breast per feed, and that remedied the problem because she could empty that one breast and get the fattier milk....only problem with that is I had to express the other side for comfort because it would start hurting before she was ready to eat again 😜 @tahtahme

It could help, just be gentle....newborns sleep a LOT and if he doesn't get enough sleep he'll likely get cranky lol just keep offering the breast, change him, offer the other breast....at this stage your milk supply will be MUCH more than he actually needs, when you first start lactating your body doesn't know how much your baby needs so it over compensates. This should calm down around the 6 week mark or so. But definitely, keep trying to feed him, as long as he's peeing enough you should be doing fine....and if you feel like he's not emptying them enough and are worried about supply, you can always pump or hand express some milk after each feed, just enough to feel comfortable and not rock hard anymore. Plus, you'll have a nice amount of stored milk for later if younneed to be away from him for a little while 😉

My boy is only 5days, so I don't think he is emptying it, plus it still feels hard in some places after he is done. Do you think waking him up and feeding like once an hour will help with this?

@tahtahme, I would say for my girl, during the day 4 hours is too long, 3 hours is usually as long as we go and I'm more comfortable going 2 hours so I know my breasts don't get engorged and also to keep my supply up. At night she sleeps 8 to 10 hours on average (right now sadly only 6 hours as she's going through a growth spurt....). And for short feedings, it happens from time to time. Just recently she went through a phase for about two days where I was lucky to get 10 mins out of a feed...as long as you offer both breasts, and baby is peeing enough still, this is fine. If it goes on for a long time it can be a problem for supply because baby is not emptying your breasts fully at each feed however, we gotta remember they are SUPER effective at emptying the breast though, sometimes it's normal to be done in 5 mins! Just keep persistent, my girl got over it and is nursing normally again 😉 she scared me though, I was worried she'd try to spontaneously wean without being fully on solids!!! Despite me knowing better lol

formula keeps babies fuller longer that's why, but breastfeed often enough and your baby gets the same fullness. @dee_isa

How long is a long time between breastfeeding? Also what about a baby that only wants to feed for like 6min at a time?

@dee_isa, also, I would limit his pacifier use if you can, comfort suckling on mom is soo much better for your supply because he will continue to stimulate your breasts. It's hard, and you may have to adapt a side lying position to get any sleep sometimes, but it can be done! I've managed to breastfeed my girl exclusively for 6 months without any bottles or pacifiers, and although it is hard on me sometimes, it's better in the long run because she will never have to be weaned off the paci, and she sleeps well! After her last feed for the night, she'll sleep for 8 hours straight in her own bed next to my side 😍

@dee_isa, formula is a blessing for many, but for many moms who want to breastfeed it just hinders....I would suggest trying to wean him off the formula, many babies act like they're hungry more but they just need more time at the breast...the amazing thing about breastfeeding is that our breasts are CONSTANTLY producing milk, even when we think we're "empty", we never really are. I've left my girl on one breast for 2 hours straight before, and every 10 to 15 minutes another let down will come, as if my breasts are working hard to produce, and then let it all out at once several times! I suggest feeding the baby at the breast as much as possible, for as long as he wants. Once he unlatches from one breast, burp him, change him, and offer the other breast. This will wake him up enough so he'll actively suck from the second breast. If he unlatches from that breast and still seems very upset and hungry, repeat the process. Burp, change, switch breasts. Do this for a few days, if he's got a good weight to him he won't starve, and make sure to count how many times he pees in a 24 hour period. If he's giving you at least 5 or 6, congrats! He's eating plenty 😉 also around 2 months babies go through another growth spurt, so if he's wanting to nurse ALL DAY, like literally lol then it's probably because of the growth spurt rather than being hungry still. They breastfeed for so many reasons, including comfort, food, self medication when not feeling good, and more. In conclusion....take a breastfeeding vacation and just nurse him all day if you have to, for about 3 days....you'll be surprised how much your supply increases with simply nursing him constantly!
