Okay this may sound dumb. FTM here though. I keep seeing you ladies mention a membrane sweep. Is that some thing that the dr does for sure or do you guys request it? And also what is it.. ? I'm curious because it hasn't been mentioned to me so I was wondering if my dr just hasn't mentioned it yet or if you guys actually request it or if it's a medical issue thing. But I also am not sure what it's meant for anyways lol. I don't like googling things though so...
Oh it's not like that! He has been doing this over 40 years. He even delivered me!! I am being induced a week early because I drive two hours to see him and I want him delivering my baby and he doesn't want me to go into labor down where I live and me try to make it to him! He had a patient go into labor a few hours from him and the hospital she went to sent her home and she still birthed because she went home and didn't make it back in time. He is close with my mom because he has delivered all five of us babies. He takes care of us really well! But because he has been in the practice for so long he has certain methods he sticks by. I respect him enough that I don't usually question what he thinks is best. He is a well known specialist and he loves his babies a lot. I trust him with my daughters life. If he says he believes something should be done a certain way I do it. I had problems at 25 weeks pregnant and thought I was going into premature labor and he waited four hours for me to get to him because of the weather. I had went to another hospital and they said it was a UTI and didn't even check for signs of labor and so he stayed at the hospital late and waited for me to come to him because their hospital dr wouldn't even see me. I was only seeing the nurse and being sent home. When I went to him my urine was completely clean. It was awful. But I also miscarried last March and instead of sending me home to natural pass the baby like most dr's want you to do he did the surgery on me. The D&C I believe it's called. He didn't want me to be bleeding and in pain at home. He doesn't believe woman should have to go through that pain on top of the mental pain unless that's what they chose to do. He is an amazing dr. I didn't mean to put off like he was forcing anything!!! @ilyric
I would just ask your doctor and talk to him about it and see what he has to say about it some doctors will do it and some won't my doctor doesn't do that he does that medicine in the hospital to help your contraction start going and get stronger
@sealion, Don't let your doctor tell you what is going to be done, he works for YOU and should be willing to meet what YOU want done. I made the mistake of feeling my Dr had every say about what happened to my pregnancy until i discussed it with a friend and they reminded me the dr is there to assist, it's ultimately YOUR decision. i wanted a natural labor, she TOLD me i was going to be induced whether i liked it or not, at 34 wks I found a new doctor. my baby was born naturally with NO complications at 38 wks.
well when he did it it didn't help I got induced on the 20th of December and had her on the 21st @ilyric
My dr probably won't ask. He doesn't give me much choice. But he will warn me. We are supposed to go over everything next week so I'll know more. I hope he doesn't plan on using that method though if it's as awful as you guys seem to describe it. 😳 @brudd330
any and all procedures should be okayed by you before being done. @brudd330
well if he/she does be prepared that it's going to hurt and bring pads cuz u will bleed a lot
@brudd330, I would've been upset if they would have done it to me without asking. I personally feel that I lasted less longer in labor when I got membranes stripped than when I didn't just my personal thought, everyone is different
Yeah I'm being induced at 39 weeks but we are not going over the plan until Monday. So I don't know if he plans on using this method or anything ! @brudd330
Yeah I'm being induced the 14th but I haven't heard of this method! Lol but I try to stay off of all the sites and just let my dr inform me as I go because I get nervous when I peak at what the websites say!! @ilyric
my doctor just did it he didn't ask if I wanted it or not but he waited till I was 40+1 weeks
😳😳 I doubt I'll be doing that!! Haha. Just didn't know if it was something I should be expecting soon!! And I didn't know if it was to help get labor going to if it was just something that needed to be done for babies health or something. My dr likes to tell me things last minute. But I kept seeing mommies mention it and I wasn't sure what it was. @ale_mtz @brudd330
It's not a 100% guarantee method, it's a type of induction that you're better off not asking for.
it's something the doctor just does its supposed to help put u in labor but good god does it hurt if u get it done be sure to carry pads with u cuz u will bleed
You can request it some doctors will do it some won't. Each time I've had my membranes sweeped I've been at least 2cm dilated and I've gone into labor the next day.
I asked my doctor to do it when I was 2 days away from 39 weeks and 3 hours later I went into painful labor. That night my son was born. I didn't find the membrane sweep painful at all actually. Just a ton of pressure. He swept them out good too lol. He even apologized thinking that it hurt me but it wasn't bad for me but I have a high pain tolerance level. I delivered my boy medicine free and epidural free
