From what I know they can definitely make it more difficult to get pregnant because you don't know when you ovulate. I would suggest using an ovulation test to find out when you are ovulating.

If your periods are irregular then so are your ovulation cycles. I'd follow @mika107 's advice.

This probably won't help & may be tmi, but I was hit by a car in June of 2011, I had a period that April, skipped May (first missed period), & in June around my normal start time I got hit. I ended up not having a period again besides maybe some spotting once or twice a year. Now, I'm 6 months pregnant with my first (& probably only since this pregnancy has been awful) baby. However her dad & I weren't using protection for 3-4 years before we finally conceived.
