I don't understand why my mother claims she has to claim me on her taxes
She no longer helps me financially and I'm 19
I hope she's not trying to play me
Haha will extra money really mean that much now, when she is in jail or paying 3x that amount in lets say 10 years when they catch it...?
well, file yours still too. whenever they catch on to it, it'll be investigated & she'll be the one that the fraud charges are put on.
I don't think it will effect you, but yes it is tax fraud and she can go to jail. Like they might not even see it for years, but if you claim yourself and she still claims you as a dependent in the same year, she WILL get in trouble for that. I would let her know that you're filing for yourself and if she still does knowing she could go to jail, that's stupid, but that's on her not you!
file yours before she does. your ssn can't be claimed on 2 different people's tax returns!
I live in her house and she does support me for the past two months, but I am still filing for myself and she should not be claiming me.
I mean taxes aren't something you wanna mess with, and it could bite her in the ass later on. If you don't live with her, you support yourself, and you're filing for yourself then there should be no reason for her to do that... My mom tried to do that last year too and I was pissed.
idk how to stop her though
I would like to get all I can so I can pay some bills
She can't legally claim you anymore. that's tax fraud and she can go to jail
and I am filing taxes that's the problem
she doesn't want me to go with her so I can go ahead and file and I think I know why now
I don't live with her and haven't for a year and a half
If you're not filing, then it doesn't matter really.
she should only have to claim you if she supported you through the year. it lowers her tax bracket.
If you're filing your own taxes also, then she should not be claiming you. You will get less money and she will get more, for you. That's just not okay...
find out where shes filing them and give them a heads up if she is filing in with an actual tax company they could be investigated for it as well or ask when she plans on coming in and see if they can get u in before her
