So manicurist have there own license and I believe its only like 500 hours (atleast in tx ) each state is different . cos school goes over everything but only to an extent . What girls have done in Houston is apply at shops at worked as apprentices to learn the trade . While they are getting there manicurist license which is great bc if you have both one you can get paid more while working and then when you get your own salon or home business you will have it all covered . I would start building your clientele now . Do y'all have days were you welcome clients from the public ? I built a lot of great relationships that way when I was in school also family is a great clientele and friends so you can get your hands on more people . Take photos of everything you do especially special occasion like wedding or big life events those look great bc they already get professional photographers to have you work on another thing I did coming out of school was I did a lot of models hair and makeup and had the photographers give me the pictures to add to my portfolio and website ... Social media is awesome you can make a Instagram or Facebook group to show people your work ...so that way building your own business and being your own boss is easier to achieve. If your feeling really ambitious you can do a business plan .. And come up with a budget a salary inventory management just little things at a time maybe do it on your computer and add files so that way when your officially licensed you have some were to start .. I do a lot of free lance work I prefer to do more makeup bc for me it was more of a passion then hair I worked at a huge salon coming out of school and then got an offer from a makeup brand and built my career there . Every brand and company I have worked for always offers training . So for example if you worked at a nail salon they'll train you to there own products and company standards which is always awesome bc no one can ever take away your know leg if you prefer to do it on your own and teach your self I would start building your kit now like every paycheck or money saved buy products you need like nails .. Powders ... The machines all of that so you can practice on friends and family and clients . It mainly depends on your market . Houston is very competitive and has a million of beauty specialist in all aspects .so if you were from Houston I would say work in a nail salon ... Learn as much as you can and while there figure out the vendors they order for products ... The way they market ... How they keep up with sanitation and osha standards and just soak up as much as you can then open for your self ... Oh and you can be a nail tech at big salons of you didn't want to go to a mom and pop nail salon . To start your own hair and extension line you want to find a distributor and some one to fund you and some one to manufacture and produce your products I would start with sketches and ideas like what type of hair what style what sizes of extensions so when you do find who will fund you .. You'll have a business plan prepared to show them or if you don't need funding to show the manufactures exactly what your looking for . 💙❤️💗

So cosmetology is covered for a basic manicure but not for the full out manicurist and if you wanna specialize in that you'll need that license but each state is different so double check that .You may want to ask your licensing board bc I'm pretty sure there's something they can do like out of those 500 hours you may not have to take some of the hours since your still in school like the hours you have doing practicals . Ask your instructors or the school .
