Ladies I need some advice. Before I got pregnant I was diagnosed with severe depression. I was put on meds for it, but when my medical got canceled I wasn't able to get my meds anymore, to be honest I don't feel the meds I was on even helped all that much. I know your hormones are all over the place when you are pregnant but I'll feel as if that's not my only problem. my depression has sky rocketed, I'm at the worst I've been. How do I bring this up to my doctor. Can anything even be done to help me? It's just to the point where no one wants to be around me anymore, not even my spouse. what should I do?

ok. I may be able to help you out with this. I was on meds pretty pregnancy and went off due to the fact they were class C drugs. go onto a med checker website or app, see what is safe for pregnancy, some drs differ. otherwise check to see about herbal supplements.

@brantleymicheal, yup, talk to your Dr. I was severely depressed with tons of anxiety and was on two meds prior to this pregnancy. I actually found out I was pregnant in Feb of this year and miscarried in march while I was still on the meds. My psychiatrist weened me off my meds immediately after she learned I was pregnant again in April. My OB/GYN was glad I got off of them but it's been a struggle at times. she talked to me on my last appointment about restarting my meds in my last months of my pregnancy to get it back in my system before the baby gets here. But since I'll be nursing..I'm going to hold off a bit.

I'm sure your doctor has seen other women who have gone through the same situation as you, so there is nothing to be scared or ashamed about. What is important right now is that your physical and emotional needs are being met right now. I don't know what resources you have around you, but two miles away from me is a guy who runs a health food store that I talk to all the time for natural approaches to whatever I am facing. I use his knowledge in combination with my doctor's recommendations. Let me know if you would like info.

As a mental health professional, the best thing you can do is talk with your doctor. Most likely meds will not be an option but at least get yourself into some therapy. If possible, find a counselor who specializes in CBT therapy. It's a different type of counseling that doesn't focus on talking but rather gives you tools and tricks to help work your way through anxiety and/or depressive episodes. It won't replace medication but it will greatly assist you in being able to identify triggers and how to deal with them. Let me know if you have any questions!

There are some depression meds that are given throughout pregnancy. You and your doctor will weigh the pros and cons of taking the medication but it's shown that mothers that have depression and take medication while pregnant have healthier babies than mothers that are depressed and don't care of themselves while pregnant. Depression during pregnancy is VERY common so don't be ashamed or afraid to talk to your doctor about it. Hang in there, it'll get better!
