So question.. Idk if anyone can answer this besides a doc but I don't feel like calling right now haha anyways. During my 14th week of pregnancy, I stepped on a rusty nail, so I got the Tetanus shot. Well, they say that every pregnant lady should get that shot in their third trimester cuz it prevents whooping cough in infants. So do I get it again? Or am I ok with the one I got before? It's a painful shot that makes you sore :/ so I want to avoid it if I can!

Could you do me a huge favor and write that in a post to send out to everyone? I got A LOT of comments the other day telling me it wasn't necessary and that they weren't going to get it. But I had thought that someone told me what you just confirmed! I'll definitely be getting mine now. It's not too late right? I'm 37 weeks :/ but it just came out in my area

@aboutellesbabe, it is 100% necessary from a medical perspective. Your immune system is compromised during pregnancy, making you and baby at high risk of contracting the virus. The cdc estimates the flu kills about 36,000 Americans each year, yet that number could be drastically reduced with vaccination. This year's vaccine protects against the 3 most common strains of the virus. Definitely look into getting the flu vaccine. Most of the negative info about vaccines is completely false and not scientifically based. If you have any more questions, I'd be to help!

Ahhww ok I'll definitely inquire about that thank you so much for your help! Since we're on the topic of vaccinations.. How necessary is it to get the flu shot? I asked this in a post the other day, but you have experience in this field, right? I read your bio :)

@aboutellesbabe, that's true, however it's safe and ok to receive earlier in your pregnancy. It'd make sense that they gave you a tdap if they knew you were pregnant, however you'll still want to know if they only gave you a tetanus booster. If they did, you haven't received the other two components of the tdap that protect against diphtheria and pertussis.

@levleah I'm not sure actually.. I think it was the normal tdap, not the booster. I don't think that I had had it within the past ten years. So baby will be ok and won't get whooping cough if I don't get it. Someone told me that you are supposed to get them for your baby in the third because he needs those antibodies. But I could be misremembering what she said

I've never got one throughout my pregnancy. But anyway, those last 10 years you won't need another

do you know if you received a tetanus booster only or the tdap vaccine? If you only receive a tetanus booster, you'll still need the tdap. Sorry, didn't read correctly at first. It's possible you only received a tetanus booster. The tdap covers tetanus plus diphtheria and pertussis.

the tdap vaccine was only licensed in 2005 so the cdc/fda are still conducting research on it the long term vaccine protection it offers, but you are protected for at least 10 years.

It's a 10 year shot and you can't get it again if you have already had it!

My doctor also recommended me getting the flu shot while pregnant ? I'm not sure if I want to or if i should ? It's all scary to me !! What do you ladies think ? Did you get the flu shot while pregnant ? Are there any risks? Or should I wait ? I'm so scared of taking anything while pregnant , much less getting this shot.. He said it isn't mandatory , just recommended.
