Any opinions on the whooping cough vaccine?
what did you ladies decide?
yay or nay?
I'm on the fence (heard of children dieing,-not sure why this has happened or if it was related)
if I get the shot I will wait till after he's born.
@ftm-jess, I got it during my last month of pregnancy .I'm completely against vaccinations for myself especially during pregnancy, but something told me to get this one, and my baby boy is perfect :)
@klachappelle, thank you , I'll be requesting it at my next appointment on Friday , I'll be 37w5d then now I'm hoping for him to stay put till I get the shot!!
Yes, I will be getting it in a couple weeks. I saw my 4 month old niece suffer from whooping cough and it was terrible. My SIL didn't get the vaccine, and it probably would have prevented it if she had. The point is to get it WHILE you're pregnant, so some of the immunity is passed onto your baby. It's still good to get it regardless but better while you're pregnant. My husband will also get the shot and our teenage boys are up to date so they are good.
Whooping cough is deadly to babies due to their immune system being immature it's better if you get it as well as you SO or whoever will be taking care of the baby an adult can carry it and give it to the baby. Plus if the baby does get it as they are coughing they can't breath so it will be better to protect the child
@brightsunsett, the only shot I had been told to have was the rogham shot , due to my blood type. yesterday my OB had mentioned the vaccine to me and said I could have it done before/after giving birth or skip it all together. I won't be skipping vaccines for my child once he's born I find them important to have , I am just not informed enough on what this whooping cough vaccine is for and the risks/benefits of getting it.
It's unfortunately something that may have been to happen anyway. A lot of mothers look for explanations for something so terrible to happen. It can't go through breast milk so that's definitely not a worry. The hope is to give the baby a bit of immunity towards whooping cough if it's around just like getting the flu vaccine while pregnant. I'll still chose the flu vaccine because my mother lost my brother at 34wks because she got the flu. So that's my personal choice and why for the flu. But for the whooping cough, everyone handling my baby will be vaccinated against it so I don't see the need to risk it.
@ftm-jess I got it two weeks ago. My hubby will get it at our next appointment. I would rather give my baby his/her first line of defense against whooping cough thru me than wait. Good luck momma! It's just the start of a lot of tough choices.
@shadowolfstar, I'll definitely wait till after giving birth , I've heard in fb that the vaccine sheds and a baby has died because of it , I don't see how this could happen !? could it be related to breastfeeding? that wouldn't make sense either tho...
no he didn't cause his insurance didn't cover it and at the time we didn't have the extra money but my son is perfectly heathly and no one else in my family or his got it and they all handle my son
I was also apprehensive, I got the shot bc once I spoke to my dr she told me that the purpose of it is for ur baby to get the antibodies thru you which is better and safer. I got it and my baby has been fine and so have I.
I'm on the fence as well. Gonna listen to what girls here have to say. BTW my obgyn never mentioned it, but since I've heard it from few friends of mine abroad I told him. Basically he told me no problem, I can get it, but he would not insist on that.
I say if you're uncomfortable about getting it while pregnant then wait. They gave me mine just hours after giving birth. This was a few years ago and weren't doing it durning pregnancy though. I'm havin my family get theirs before hand and I'm up to date still on mine so I may just wait til she's born too.
