Hot topic of the week in fOckery 2026:
Should homeschooling be banned or at least all states be regulated?
(I myself do not homeschool)
So, here in California, there is a recent incident where a home school child had not been "checked on" in years. I'm assuming that the check-ins are a part of the regulations and I think they did a virtual visit and they used a different kid. Then they had another check in and it didn't happen. Turns out the actual child had gone missing and they just found the body in a different state. Mom killed her 9 y/o. I could have a few details off but thats the general story. So, while I don't think homeschooling is terrible, and I think people should have options, it needs to be highly regulated. Not only that, but obviously at physical schools, there are mandated reporters so they can maybe catch that something is going on at home where as if the abuse is happening by the caregiver in the home, there isn't really anyone around to notice said abuse or neglect, there is no safe person. I don't know, just my few thoughts.
This 100%. I called CPS several times on a family this year. I *knew* something was happening to the kids at home.
The last time I made a report, there was enough concerning info in my report to trigger CPS coming to question the kids. CPS immediately opened an active investigation by visiting the home and interviewing mom and step dad. This was on a Friday. The mother came to school the following Monday and immediately unenrolled the kids to “homeschool.”
This was in November, and I’m worried about those kids.
Must be HIGHLY regulated. The number of kids we get in 4th grade or higher who cannot even read at a 1st grade level or do basic math is CRIMINAL.
I’m all for homeschooling for the right reasons and for those reasons I can understand. However I know SO many people who are exactly like the post you posted and it’s awful.
@feralwitchymom, Some humans are just filled with hate. And go on and pass it down to their offsprings like a family heirloom.
I don’t think homeschooling should be banned but I definitely overheard people talking about how loose the regulations are in Indiana and how they get around them and basically just don’t do any schooling. I’m not sure what the right answer is.
@humblewarriormama our public school friends that has kids in few of the area schools say the same thing the kids dont have ahdh but the teachers want them or tell parents they need to look into it because they can't have kids not staying calm or quiet all day. I was in the school system 12 years ago and I saw it. I felt bad for the teachers and kids because the teachers have to teach so the kids pass the statetest and thats all the focus. Even our teachers at our online public school all where brick and mortar teachers left the system for the same reason.
@mom2godzillaandwonkypets thats why alot of family's who pry should not homeschool do in our area but the school systems up here are awful and they have no choice.
Hell no. We’re thinking about home schooling when our son is older. And I already bought a preschool curriculum to start with him one of these days.
That and if the school system wasn’t so screwed up these days, more people wouldn’t be hesitant to send their kids to school. There’s too much government influence in It and everything is a load of crap and nothing matters but the standardized tests anyways.
This. Most kids graduate and are not even prepared to do anything but pass a state test. They fail at communication, knowing how to do basic adult This like taxes, how to buy a home and more. We dont need kids who can pass an out dated test for school funding. We need school who grow with the times and whats needed today is not what was needed even when we were in school. Technology has changed and even our public schools are against it. Alot of parents step in to homeschooling so the child learns how to be an adult in the world they are living in today.
@mom2godzillaandwonkypets, Exactly! Hell, I went to college and I still dont know how to do most of these things. 😅
I think homeschool is amazing. We are online public school so different then homeschool but Banned no and regulated no because who makes the choice on what should be banned and not? I have alot of homeschooling friends the children are so confident in who they are. They all love reading. Homeschool is not what most think. The community in homeschool is amazing. Our public school friends the kids are all failing math and reading state test. The kids never want to go to school. Now this could be just our area our public schools are awful.
Homeschooling and cyber schooling should not be banned. Families choose these options for many reasons safety, special needs, faith, bullying, or failing school systems. I’ve had children in cyber school since 2010, and for us it has provided consistency, accountability, and access to education that traditional schools could not.
That said, reasonable regulation makes sense to ensure children are not being neglected educationally. Basic progress checks and support systems protect students without punishing responsible parents.
The solution is not banning homeschooling, but strengthening oversight while respecting parental rights and recognizing that one educational model does not fit every child.
