My son texted me today at his lunch time and said someone stole his lunch. He was upset and wanted to come home. He said he told the teacher but they couldn't do anything about it. He hadn't had anything to eat and just wanted to leave. At first I was upset and ready to react but I thought about it and now it makes me sad. What if this student is facing food insecurity at home and these are the only meals he/she eats at school? If a child has to take food I feel like they are just trying to survive. I'm waiting in my son to text me back because now I want to make sure the child has food and I want to make sure they don't have to take anything to be full. 😢 And yes Im letting him come home. Clearly something is bothering him and he's hangry.

he told me that he was at the lunch table and he and another student were watching something on the chrome book. He said when he went to eat his food it was gone and his friend beside him was finishing off the last of whatever he had. He said he told him he didn't have breakfast and was really hungry so he forgave him. He said the first teacher he told told him to tell the other teacher and he did, the cafeteria line had its doors closed so they told him they couldn't do anything. I got him something to eat.

Strange. Usually in our school here they would offer the extra meal so that kids do not go without. They do not let kids starve and wait it out until they get home. The school will offer the child a meal for free. I cannot believe the difference in states. Also the school lunches are free to everyone no matter the incomes.

Keep us posted. My mom was a career teacher and the neglect she saw or even just straight up the parents are struggling and they are going without as well is heart breaking.

From what I have read on here I feel like not every state follows similar guidelines and some school related posts on here are worrisome for sure. Our school is supportive of many challenges and would never allow a child to go hungry support hate and will address bullying etc. I hope the parents get help in reporting the source.

@icebergahead I totally agree. If that child is hungry, how are they going to learn? It should be an obligation, it's cruel to let them go without.

@icebergahead, I should also add that my son is in a behavioral contained class. My son is autistic but very high functioning. While all the kids in his class has some form of a diagnosis, majority do have behavioral issues. unfortunately being in a contained class you will experience certain behaviors. I'm not sure if this was a behavioral thing, a hungry issue etc. My sister was in close distance to my son's school so she picked him up for me and I got him chick fila so he was content. I did ask him if he thinks this could be an issue where the student is going without food and maybe needs a little extra snacks or resources and he said no, he said the friend told him he didn't have breakfast and was hungry. He said he forgave him. I generally don't have issues with his school, he has flourished in his school this year to the point he is going into general classes for 7th grade. I will be brining the issue up to the teacher so if there's a next time for any student it's handled more appropriately.

That is a tough one. I wouldn’t want the kid to be starving either but I don’t understand why the teacher couldn’t look into it either.
