I learned that we shouldn’t hit them. Instead redirect them to something they can do and explain why they shouldn’t be doing what they were doing. Works better and avoids things escalating.
I used to. Until I went to therapy for other things and learned why I do it. It’s a learned behavior from my own parents. It actually took a bit of time and a lot of energy for me NOT to have hitting be my instinct. My therapist helped me acknowledge my emotions and use strategies come back to baseline, and I was able to carry it over to my own child. I haven’t hit my kid since he was like 5. (But I was working on not hitting for a while before that) I’ve learned about redirection and positive reinforcement. And now that he’s older we go to our separate spaces until we’ve cooled down and then we talk about it.
My son still brings up that I hit him and he remembers it. It shatters my heart knowing all the damage I did/could have done. And we’ve talked about it and how wrong it is.
