Опыт других мам с задержкой речи у детей: помощь раннего вмешательства

This is for moms whose children have or had speech delays around 18mo & needed referred to early intervention..

My son isn’t moving speech wise the way he should be. So my doctor had referred us to early intervention to help him get on track with speech. But my small little worry is what if it’s not just speech & there’s more going on?

I guess I’m just curious how many other moms dealt with this & speech was ALL it was & early intervention helped? & how many went & it turned out to be more than just a speech issue?

I worry a small bit about autism. Only bc I noticed one thing with his speech is he went from saying “mama” & “dada” & showing interest to now he doesn’t say even those things much. & I know with my nephews, that’s one of the first signs of things they did.

So idk I just need some advice & hear experiences from you guys.

Thanks in advance! 🫶🏽

Can I ask did he just stop talking completely? Or did he say a few words and now none?

He was saying “mama & dada” & he was doing the “BAA” sound for ball & knows what a ball is, but now he’s kinda stopped doing all that. But then within the last couple days, has started to randomly at times say “DADA” but no more Mama or anything else.

Maybe look into first steps as well to be sure even if you're still slightly concerned. McKenna will be referred to speech and first steps. She is talking. Sometimes 3 word phrases but from my.own personal experience, that doesn't mean she doesn't need help. Early intervention is key! I think if I had gotten Aubrey into speech before she was 3, she would have done better. I really regret waiting too long. I thought because she was speaking sentences she was fine... Unfortunately I was wrong.

That’s actually crazy you say that bc I had concerns with Marley whose now 4 & it’s the same thing.. she can talk & talks a LOT & says more than a sentence at a time BUT it’s the way she’s saying things if that makes sense? Like adding maybe an S to the end of words that don’t need them or she will kinda jam herself up like her mind is going faster than her mouth can get the thought out. You can still clearly understand her & no one struggles but it’s just pronouncing words & how she’s speaking that doesn’t seem right but I was just thinking it’s a “kid thing” & she will grow out of it eventually but maybe I should look into it for her as well.

@coffeebean

Definitely get her seen if she still struggles with sounds that was Aubrey's biggest issue. She would say the beginning and end of words but not the middle because she talked way too fast. Part of that was on me. I talk fast but we both have ADHD

Kynzleigh has a stuttering issue. Like her brain and mouth can't keep up.

We went through early intervention with my youngest for speech, and he also did developmental intervention. It helped him learn how to communicate with peers and take turns, etc. did wonders for him! He started at 20 months and his only word was “uh oh”. I didn’t get a Mama until later. But the full evaluation is incredibly helpful. You are able to pick which services to utilize, once they complete the evaluation and come back to you with what they suggest.

My opinion would be to go forward with early intervention for speech even if you believe it is more. If more services need to be added down the road it will be best to have him already in the system. In my experience, the more thorough reviews take place around age 3. However, early intervention will likely go over all concerns you have and help with services where appropriate

I definitely already contacted them, they’ll be contacting me in a week to schedule to appt, I just wanted to get some experiences in the meantime. I definitely planned to do it bc me & my husband been expressing the concerns with each other already so we weren’t surprised. Just not really sure what to expect & I didn’t have as many concerns until the appt questionnaire when I was realizing he’s not doing certain things or has stopped when he should be doing it so she also said to basically go with them and from there they’d let us know if they had more concerns to screen for anything else. So I’m hopeful & looking forward to seeing how it helps him or what they say.

@coffeebean, cool. My oldest was in physical and speech therapy. She is in fact on the spectrum but that wasnt addressed much until her 3 year evaluation. She was done with physical therapy around age 2 and dropped speech within the last year. She speaks amazingly
