Have you tried having your daughter potty train him? My daughter is such a little mommy that she basically potty trained her brother when he was 2. He showed interest on his own and then she ran with it. She made him sticker charts, took him to the bathroom, basically I just had to supervise. He was still not pooping in the toilet though and often pooped in his pants, but once I put him in preschool they had him poop trained in like a month. Sometimes having someone other than mom doing the training can do wonders. Can you find a daycare that will potty train 3 year olds? He will likely be more cooperative if the whole class is doing it.
Okay so I’m reading this and resonating so much because this was me. I tried everything except spending money on someone to help. I too had my kid set up in an amazing preschool program and ended up having to send him to the bottom of the list twice. I ended up relocating and contacting local the school district because I suspected autism and speech delay and he was over 2 years 9 months so he qualified to be tested for learning disabilities and autism and to receive services through the district. The program they put Zay in also covered potty training. He was in the program for a week and next thing you know he was all about it and fully potty trained and those pull ups were GONE!Sometimes it takes kids seeing other kids their age doing the same things to see that it’s okay or what they’re supposed to be doing.
Since you suspect dyslexia, I think there’s nothing wrong with going to the district and saying you suspect this and want him evaluated to see if he has it. If he does test for dyslexia or another processing disorder, he would be getting those early intervention preschool services and help with other developmental things like potty training. People don’t realize public schools help with that piece with preschoolers who are there for other services like dyslexia, speech, autism, etc. Just a thought to bring to the table.
My daughter didn't potty train one damn minute before she decided to and she was at least 4.5. I would go to work so upset and my older lady patients who had lived a lot of lofe and raised a lot of babies would always tell me, "Honey, she won't go off to college wearing a diaper..." And one day it just happened.
If it makes you feel any better, my oldest still uses his pull up. It’s likely sensory related for him, but his OT and PED both agree not to force the issue bc the chronic constipation and medicine cycle is worse and harder to get out of.
Your son will really truly will do it when he’s ready. Have him dump the poop into the potty and practice wiping his own butt. He can still learn to poop independently even if he’s using the pull up. There’s an entire potty training method where kiddos sit on the potty with the pull up on to get comfortable with the idea of going potty in a seated position without the fear of the potty. Just don’t make it a power struggle or act like it’s a big deal.
what do you recommend when it comes to him starting preschool? i mentioned above that today I’m super irritated because I finally got a call after waiting over a year for this preschool, and I had tell them to put us back on the bottom of the list, because they won’t take non-potty trained kids.
he definitely is showing signs of dyslexia, which my daughter has… I feel like starting school earlier will really benefit him but I just can’t get him to potty train
@jennatess, my oldest only goes at night after dinner, so it was a nonissue for us. But in your case I would recommend either getting a drs note or looking into the licensing rules around potty ability in your area. Where we’re at now and when we lived in the Chicago suburbs, it was a nonissue. Yes everyone would prefer a potty trained 4 year old, but they would still take him and work with him. When we lived in southern IN, it was a whole different story and none of the places I contacted would.
Usually places that take infants have the licensing to deal with potty help. Does the place he’s on the wait list for take infants? If you’re able to consider other places, that might be a good route as well if others are more flexible with the potty training.
Do you think school would benefit him for structure or social reasons? Or kindergarten preparation? We ended up in a nanny share situation that did all of the above - 2 other kids at my house, very structured schedule and she did a lot of the kindergarten work for us. This fell into our laps mostly due to COVID but it helped ease a lot of my “not going to preschool” concerns, bc I was very upset initially we couldn’t do traditional preschool due to potty training and then the pandemic.
@jennatess, we lived in Southern IN for 10 months so he could have gone to preschool where we are now and he had already established the pooping at night only thing by then. He’s been in public school for 1.5 years now and they aren’t even aware of his pull up reliance. Although I do feel like maybe I should tell the nurse and tell them to call me to the school if there’s an emergency poop bc I’m 10 minutes away and would say f-it to work to go help him if he needed it. Which is a privilege I know not everyone has.
That’s how I felt potty training my daughter. My son was super easy.
I babysat for a lady one time and didn't know her son wasn't potty trained. He was way too old to be 💩 his pants! I had no clue and Def would have asked for a lot more if I knew his age and thought I was going to be changing a grown ass kids diaper....anywho!!!! He was potty trained that day!! 🤣 He was way older than your son.

I’m just extra upset today because this preschool we’ve been on the waiting list for over a year finally called today saying that they were ready to take eric, but he’s not potty trained so now they can’t. which I totally respect and understand! it just sucks to have to tell them to put us back on the bottom of the list. ☹️
@love_linds lol not all at once! I tried with mine and they didn't make it all to the potty and I changed real quick to 1 at a time!

Seriously……I posted about this a while back. My child is “terrified” of the toilet when it comes to pooping 😡 She pushes but says it hurts her butt…I put A&D and still she cries 😓 She’ll hold it in for 3-4 days at a time!
@jennatess, awe it’s coming soon 👌kids are smarter than we think too “don’t turn on the tv even if he just sits on the toliet and count s to 10 : / a few time I had to take Jayden to urgent care for him holding it and 1 time he was backed up and was hospitalized “the scary part about kids holding it is that The old poop will go up and get hard and when they poop new will be harder to push out I would Fake call the hospital like the non emergency number and it worked he would hear it on speaker and finally sit on the toliet ,, I would tell him you don’t want to go back to the poop dr and take her medicine so poop it out was frustrating and scary to see him hold it in for 3 /4days his own pediatrician s daughter would hold it for 7days crazy right
@sherrynygirl, yeah, ive definitely said along the lines of “ if you don’t poop on the potty you’re gonna have to go see the doctor“ a few times and he just says “give me da shots, i don’t care.” he’s such a shit head.

i’m all for waiting until he’s ready, but I think he’s genuinely just being a little shit. that, and he really really needs to be around other kids socializing more… So I really would appreciate if he started school sooner rather than later.

Let him watch too videos of cartoons potty training and make it really fun or even when my older 2 sons were little they pooped at certain time when they came from school so try the potty time at same time even before a bath say oh sit here while I comb your hair or brush teeth so he just learn to relax before he has to use the bathroom

Really? Both of my boys were day & night trained before 2. But my friends daughters were all 3/4yrs old before they were trained. So I would of thought it was the opposite.
we’ve seen two pediatricians (bc ours moved & had to find a new one) and both of them were reassuring us that boys train much later than girls. Still so frustrating.
@love_linds, my oldest wasn’t trained until almost 4 and my 3.5 year old is justifying starting to get the poop part. There are kids who train earlier than others, but typically boys bodies mature later
