What to do with strep throat?
What would you guys do in this situation? I’m so undecided. I was diagnosed with strep throat like the week before thanksgiving, took all the antibiotics, and everything was fine. Then a week and a half ago my throat started hurting the same way yet again, so I finally went to the doctor last wednesday and once again tested positive for strep, and got more antibiotics. I was fine and it looked almost cleared up for a couple days, but then yesterday my throat started hurting agaaaiiiinnn and it looks almost worse today than it did last week. I’m on the antibiotics until I think Saturday morning, but it doesnt look like the cephalexin (I’m allergic to amoxicillin) is even touching it this time. I have an appointment with my OB next tuesday, but I’m starting to wonder if I should try to see a doctor sooner (like tomorrow) to see if there’s anything else they can give me. Any input of this makes sense? Basically I’m just wondering if I should give the antibiotics another day or two, or just go see the doctor again.

😂 It’s okay! I do that all the time! And I actually didnt replace it the first time around. I’m still kicking myself for it. I did this time, though, so I have no idea why it seems to be coming back while I’m still on the antibiotics.

I usually have to go through 2 rounds of antibiotics to completely get rid of it
@raisinglittlegamers, sounds about right. 😝 I dont think I’ve ever had to be go through 2 rounds of antibiotics for strep before, but with the exception of this past month, I think I’ve only had it once since I had my tonsils out 20 years ago, so I dont remember.
Fucking sickness is horrible this year!!! I hope you get relief soon. Strep is a bitch, im sorry you’re dealing with it again
Oh I know! Everyone is just getting sick with everything these days! We cant catch a break! And it is a bitch. Luckily my sore throat is extremely mild to the point I barely even notice it, unlike when my husband got it last month. He was miserable and could barely swallow, but he still has tonsils unlike me, so that might explain that a bit. I’m just tired of dealing with it! I know strep can turn into way worse things sometimes and that terrifies me.
@llamapantaloons, yes it can and that scares me too. I’m the only one in my house with tonsils so I’m the only one that gets the shit. I really hope you can get it taken care of so it doesn’t turn into worse
@damnitred, I’m living proof you can get it without tonsils! 😝 Besides the past month, though, I only had it once since getting them out a little over 20 years ago. I guess it’s just crap luck mixed with this lovely pregnancy immune system that’s getting to me these days.
I have no advice I just hope you start feeling better soon

@mom2godzillaandwonkypets, I hope so too! I’ll also have them do extra tests to see if it’s something besides strep. Who knows. 😝

Really stupid question and I’m sure you have but have you replaced your toothbrush after 48 hours on antibiotics. Especially with strep you’ll reinfect yourself repeatedly
I did! Well, my doctor said half way through the antibiotics to change it, so I changed it sunday night (I started antibiotics wednesday last wednesday night). I also changed my pillow case, washed my water cup I drink out of every day multiple times, changed out the straws I use in it at least every other day and ran those through the dishwasher, and even started using a new tube of toothpaste despite my old one still being half full. I dont know what else to do at this point. 🤷🏻♀️ Unless somehow my chapstick can be reinfecting me. I use that stuff religiously. Unless this is just some really picky strain, or it’s something else that some how keeps popping up positive on the rapid strep tests.

I think it depends on the doctor. This has happened to me a couple times and it had 1 doctor say wait and I had to redo and I've had another 1 give me something stronger and had me take both which was too much! Lol I hope you start feeling better before Christmas tho!!
Luckily my family did christmas on thanksgiving so I dont have to travel 90 miles a month before my due date. 😂 But yeah, I’d rather not be sick christmas regardless!
And yeah, I dont know what mine would say. I could always call and try to talk to a nurse tomorrow I suppose and see what they say about it.
Might ask about clydamyacin … not sure if I’m even close to spelling that right. I’m also allergic to penicillin and was told this was the strongest antibiotic I could take (granted it was for a tooth infection that wouldn’t go away so not the same thing) but it worked and didn’t kill me.
Do you know if that one’s safe for pregnancy? I’m so paranoid. I hate being on all these antibiotics right now. But I know that’s at least safer for baby than letting strep go untreated, of course. Bleh. 😓

I would go back to the doctors. You may need something stronger.
@scream.queen, I’ve never heard of it! But probably! Amoxicillin is the only one I know I’m allergic to. I’ve never had issues with any other antibiotics that I’m aware of, and even then I think it was only a rash I got from it.
@llamapantaloons, That's why I asked because I saw you said you were allergic to amoxicillin. Both of my boys are allergic to it too and they usually get a z pack or cefdinir prescribed.

Yeah make sure you’re taking the full course of the antibiotics even if you start to feel better before you’re done. Ask to see the dr earlier and see if there’s something else you’re not allergic to that you can take. I don’t know if they can do this for strep, but I used to get chronic UTIs and eventually they cultured my urine to find exactly what antibiotics would work the best. I had to be on it for quite a while but it helped significantly reduce how many I would get!

Yeah, sadly it’ll be a different doctor than my OB I’m sure. I think she’s only there monday and tuesday and she’s always booked solid. But I do see her next tuesday.
But anyways, that might be something to look into! Options are just limited when pregnant and allergic to the main antibiotic given for strep. The doctor I said last week said he was going to give me a different cephalosporin antibiotic than he did the first time, but he ended up calling in the same exact thing and dose, unless that was just what walgreens had or something. Who knows.
And I’m glad you got your uti situation figured out! Those are the worst!
I would go see the doctor again, it sounds like they antibiotics aren't effective against the strep.
Yeah, that’s what I’m more leaning towards. Ugh. I’m getting so sick of this weakened immune system. 😓 I hope it bounces back shortly after baby’s born!

YAY!!!!! It’s not spreading and looks like the treatments are working. My doctor wants to go back to twice a week again instead of once a week and if that’s going to help with the cervical cancer I’m ok with that plan 😊🥳
Okay, I have my 30 week appointment towards the end of the month. Will they likely see me again at 34 weeks and then every week orrr? Basically, when will they start seeing me bi-weekly and then weekly?
Both my kids have strep throat and I’m beat they won’t take their antibiotics
I know this is silly but alot of people forget. Did you replace your toothbrush? You can get strept if you didn't replace your toothbrush after getting diagnosed the first time.
