When can my child stand at the bus stop alone?

What age would you be comfortable allowing your child to stand at the school bus stop alone ? My son is 9 in the 4th grade. I walk him to the bus stop. To let him have some independence I stand a distance away from him. He’s the only kid at our complex that goes to this school at this time

and rides the bus. A group of middle school kids are sometimes out there before his bus comes depending on if it’s on time or late. Anyways, I don’t know when I will ever feel like he’s ready to be at the stop alone. I just want to see everyone’s opinions and what they do. Maybe it will show me I’m just overly paranoid or maybe I’m not lol.

Never lol not where I live it's way to dangerous between the random shootings and kids missing not unless he had a group of others with him.

Maybe 14. They would need to have a clear understanding of the potential dangers and ways to react to them.

I don't think it's paranoid, especially if he is the only child his age and it's a routine, which is what creeps look for. Knowing that a child will be unattended and in the same spot every day.

When they are mature enough to understand the dangers etc.

They can go alone when they’re driving lol I still walk my oldest to the school door every morning, two younger kids in tow. Idc if that makes me overprotective, I’m okay with that. 😅

I think it would depend on maturity. I would say between 13-15.

My oldest I probably would have let him at 9 only because he was very mature, responsible and looked way older then 9. My current 9 year old absolutely not, my 11 year old possibly but I don’t think I would feel 100% comfortable I’d prob be anxious. That being said only my oldest takes the bus and he didn’t start until he was 14. Would totally depend on the maturity level of the child as well as how well they observe their surroundings and behave while not supervised.

The way the world is today… honestly never. When my oldest went to public school, i dropped her off & picked her up. I don’t trust anyone.

Probably 14&up if they are mature enough to understand the dangers, I don’t think you’re being paranoid my kids get picked up right at my drive way and I am out there with them or with my son watching from my porch or window. I always worry someone could pass and just take him and I’d think he got on the bus 😖

thanks everyone. my son did pre k, k and one month of first grade in public school. i always drove him and from 1,2,3 he was home bound. This year I had some unforeseen issues arise so he has to take the bus. He just started a month ago. The good thing is, the only kids who ride his bus are the people he is in class with. I’m not 100 percent comfortable hes on the bus but he needs a way to school and unfortunately I am not able to take him or pick him up. In a few months I’m hoping that changes. My son doesn’t understand the dangers nor is his maturity there. He’s oblivious to his surroundings as well. I just feel better walking and watching him. I let him walk ahead of me but I can still see him and I stand a distance from him so he feels some independence but i’m close enough if anything where to happen I am right there. Good to see i’m not just being extra.

I think given your situation and the circumstances you are 100% doing the right thing. He’s getting a bit of independence without it being dangerous or making you anxious. Your doing a great job 💕💕

I’m late to the party but we still wait outside with our 5th and 8th grader. Too many people doing their makeup in the morning and speeding in our complex to notice kids crossing the road and it’s semi dark out still since my kids bus comes before 7. So we stand, at a distance and walk the dog. We do let them come home together and I don’t wait but they aren’t standing around, no one’s home from work yet, I can hear the bus and watch on camera plus my oldests phone I can track so I know where the bus is. When my daughter goes to high school I will probably let her go alone. But it may run into my youngest since middle and hs buses are back to back.

Honestly depends on the maturity of the child and understanding danger because some children are very mature for their age. Where you live is another factor in it tho too.
