My dad was diagnosed with ALS ( Amyotrophic lateral schlerosis) which is a progressive neuordegenrative disease which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
I am still processing it. Im in nursing school, my brother chandler starts his senior year in august, and my baby sister turns 2 in october.
All I can think about is that our dad wont be around to see me finish college, watch chandler graduate, and he wont see parker grow up. 😔
He wont get to watch any of his grandkids graduate or grow up. He has told his mom, all my siblings and myself.
ALS has no cure and doctors dont know what causes it. Even with treatment (only 33% effective) it at best will give us 2-5 years if were lucky.
Idk of this will be of any help but back in March I tested positive for EBV. I was experiencing alot of neuro symptoms as well. I decided to see a naturopathic doctor that specializes in both natural and western medicine. The signs that I was showing were very early signs of MS just like your dad. There is no cure but all she did was made a few changes in my diet, no wheat, gluten, dairy, processed food/sugars, she also did a food sensitivity test on me as well and told me to avoid those food. This was back in Feb. I do not have a single one of those symptoms today for some ppl EBV does develop into MS and for some it doesn't but like your dad MS also affects the brain and nerves. Also the biggest killer STRESS. In 6 weeks of making the changes I hadn't experience any of the symptoms I was having. Your dad and I are 2 different people but I'm just suggesting as a start he can change his diet and if it's something you believe in I'd say consult a naturopathic doctor as well. Him stressing about his condition will make it worst. I wish him the best and I'm so sorry to hear what he's going through
@mww_c I definitely agree with that! He told me not to worry (easier said than done) he said for the most part he is healthy and strong right now aside from his right hand/arm it has already affected that.
@inkedoutmomma16 I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish him well and pray for only good news for you guys.
@mww_c thank you! I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I want to be real and honest with myself.
I am so truly sorry. I have supported a few patients through the end of their life and it's very difficult. They get very anxious as the disease starts to creep up their body because they know how the end will come when it gets there. I'm thinking of your family, that's so hard.
Thank you girl. It definitely took me by surprise.
He gave hints that something was up and when he asked for my social to add him to his life insurance policy that was when I kinda knew but he confirmed on Friday what I already knew.
Im just trying to kinda process everything and not overthink everything.
My brain just keeps going back to everything I've learned about this. I've had to take extra anxiety meds just to sleep.. I was up until 4 AM last night. 😔
@inkedoutmomma16 let me know if you need anything. Just take it day by day, it's a lot to take in and you're already super busy. It can be really hard to balance your emotional feelings and your clinical knowledge, too.
@jenx Thanks girl. I'm so thankful that I'm almost done with school for the time being... and I have a few months before school starts back. I chose to take a few months off and start back in the spring.
Ive been on vacation. I'm just trying to take some time to process everything before I have to go back to work and before the last few weeks of school starts back up.
So sorry for this news. I hope he gets the right meds to help. My neighbor has had ALS for 8 years. She just within the last year became wheel chair bound but otherwise doing well. Medicine has greatly improved for this over the years and I hope that’s the case for your dad!
@momgroupreject I am a nursing student. I don't have to Google anything.
@momgroupreject They only have two FDA approved drugs to treat ALS and the success rate is 33%.
I am hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I do not want to get my hopes up because I know the odds based on research. My mom's coworkers step dad just passed away from ALS...
Its scary. I just never in a million years thought this is how my dad would go. You know?
ALS isn't very common.
I'd also like to add, there's a doctor on YouTube you can check out, Dr. Eric Berg. I don't think there's a condition he hasn't covered and I've been following some of his advice as well and it has been very helpful.
