Should my child start pre-K or wait for Kindergarten?
How important do you feel that kids should start in Pre-K or wait until Kindergarten?
My oldest 3 kids started in pre-k and did ok but had a few issues because they were bored and didn’t want to pay attention.
Madi is really smart. She knows most of what they’d teach already. She can write her whole alphabet and many words. We are working on reading now. So we’ve been discussing just waiting until Kindergarten until she starts. Her birthday is after the cut off date so if she started school this fall it would be pre-k. Also, her being my last I really kind of want to soak up this last year before she’s gone all day.

I think it’s important I didn’t send my daughter to pre k now that she is in kindergarten she has no class room experience. I asked the school if she can repeat the grade I feel she isn’t ready for 1st grade.

Definitely do pre K. Igancio had 2 year's of going to his academy before school and it helped out so much. Luna will go to the same academy by 4 so I get wanting to hold on but trust me it will benefit her so much

I would send her to pre-k. I'm sure having her home would be great but would it really be beneficial for her to be at home with you. Pre-k is a vital step before kindergarten. If you think she could skip pre-k and is ready for kindergarten I would reach out to the school to have her evaluated to see if she could bypass the age cutoff. Some districts allow this

I’m here for the responses too. My oldest was in headstart but it got closed down due to covid and the kids catching it as well as like half of the school within the first week. He starts kindergarten in August and even though he’s super bright, he’s autistic and doesn’t get around many other kids and can be very reserved and quiet on days. Our school system is sooooo ghetto and I hope he does okay. Private school is crazy expensive and I don’t trust myself enough to homeschool, plus he needs the social interaction with other kids his age. We’ll see how it goes. I have high hopes.

Get him into a summer program at the school. That’s what I’m doing with Liam.

I think it's all about what works for your child. She knows the schoolwork and she has a lot of socialization. My kiddo didn't do pre-k and is gifted and talented and incredibly social. You wouldn't pick her out of the class as not having gone to pre-k in a million years. Go with your gut, mama. :)

I think it’s really child dependent. I was really upset my oldest didn’t go to pre-k bc of COVID, us moving 3x in 18 months and potty training issues. Come to find out he’s bored in kindergarten 🤦🏼♀️ Now he still needed work on handwriting and some fine motor skills that I’m sure he would have gotten more practice with in pre-k, but since he’s in OT, we were already working on that just maybe not as regularly.
Sounds like you’re doing a great job at home and she has a lot of socialization opportunities already, so unless you really need a break during the day, I bet she’ll be fine without pre-k.
My youngest’s birthday is on the cut off and we’re back and forth with what to do with him. He doesn’t have any socializing opportunities bc we don’t nanny share any more. I work from home and nanny’s where I live have gotten very expensive over the last year. So I think we’re looking for part time pre-k to balance all the variables.

I believe it is helpful and important.

Same! For so many reasons.

My son didn’t do any pre-k due to Covid and his birthday missed the cut off for the free preschool offered by the school district. It was still hybrid at the beginning of this year as well so I just couldn’t swing it. My daycare lady helps him a lot with getting ready. I bought a bunch of work books so he can learn how to write his letters and we work on writing and sight words at home on weekends so I definitely feel like he’ll do ok. Has she been around kids her age? I would put her in a group sport or activity just for the socialization aspect of it all. Get her used to being away from you for a few hours at a time bc I feel like that’s where a lot of kids struggle.

My older 2 didn't go to prek (between my son not being ready and then covid) so they went straight to kindergarten this year and they are both doing wonderful.

I sent my first to pre k and he did well in kindergarten. He went in knowing more than my second did. I didn’t put my middle son in pre k and he has excelled in kindergarten. He’s reading at a second grade level, math scores are always 100% and his social skills have really grown. So all in all I don’t think pre k is vital

Depends on the kid I guess. All mine went at least a year. It’s helping Ollie so much and I think getting him ready to see what schools like. It’s a big jump from staying home to going to school all day just take that into consideration she has enough siblings for socialization and if you feel that academically she’s where she needs to be I wouldn’t really worry
