Медикаменты при СДВГ у ребёнка: за и против?

Pros and cons if medication for adhd in kid? My 5 year old was diagnosed with severe ADHD and I’m leaning more towards the medication side since it’s starting to effect his education…doing my own research but would like other adhd parents opinions and why they choose what

When my daughter was diagnosed they told me they can test her saliva and it can give a pretty accurate estimate on how she'd react to different medications. Is that something you can ask about? My daughter's is mild so as of right now we aren't medicating hers as it doesn't affect her school work.

I cant really vouch for a child with medication, but I can give you some personal experience pros and cons. I was diagnosed with ADD (which is now like ADHD subtype B or something - the non hyper, just slow minded kind of version) in my early 20s. Thinking back, me and my mom both figure I probably did have it as a kid, but she never thought of that back in the 90s. But I do remember homework always being a struggle with me not being able to focus on it back then, and constant meltdowns about it because I couldnt focus or understand what I needed to do. But anyways, I started taking Vyvanse for it when I was in college, and it really helped me be able to focus during class and helped me get my assignments done easier, which was definitely a pro. It did make me really jittery at times, though. Not always, but sometimes. Idk how dosage works with kids, but maybe they would be on a smaller dosage. I think I was on 50 mg most of the time?

But anyways, the ADD-riddled point I’m trying to get to is it might be worth trying if your kid is really struggling in school. I know it helped me, but once again, I was an adult. I honestly dont know what I would do if my child needed the medication, because the jitteryness of it sucks, but it also does wonders for helping you focus. Though sometimes caffeine does the same thing with my certain type of ADHD.

This is really something to discuss with their doctor a lot, and if you think it’ll help, give it a try. I’ve heard a lot of good things from other parents who’s kids have been on medication. But it might take some time to find the proper medication and dosage.

I have a couple kids with ADHD. My 16 year old refuses to take the meds and I can’t make someone take them. But they do make a huge difference for him when he has taken them. Our 13 year old is bipolar, has a conduct disorder and is adhd and takes a non stimulant adhd medication along with their bipolar meds. It really has helped tremendously.

My kids been medicated since 4. We chose it because he needs to concentrate in school and he can't unless he's medicated so it's for his own good. Definitely was not happy with choosing to give such a young child such strong medication. He's got ADHD and ODD so bad he's actually going to start getting a maintenance dose since he's gained more weight now so he'll be getting it twice a day. But that scares me too cuz I know it's not good for their heart. Also my kids on two medications.

I would definitely medicate him if it is beginning to affect his education. I myself was a child that went undiagnosed and having medicine could have drastically changed my trajectory in life. I take Adderall (I've been off it for 2 years because of fertility treatments and pregnancy) when I am on Adderall it makes a big difference in my day to day life.

I don’t really have a pros or cons list.. I just didn’t like the way the medication made my daughter act so I took her off it. We try to avoid the foods that I think trigger it, over time I just figured out ways to control it. For example, I notice when she doesn’t sleep enough that worsens her symptoms so I make sure she gets enough sleep. We started seeing a behavioral therapist about 4 months ago and that has helped tremendously! I think medication is needed for some kids but for mine I don’t find it necessary. find what works for you! It took a whole lot of trial and error but as of now it seems like these methods that we use have it controlled.

@alicianoelle32 yeah that's kinda what happens to my son. Like we took him to get a tree this Christmas and he was very quiet the whole time, he doesn't want his picture taken, he's just very distant

@ladyfreyja, have you thought about therapy or satisfied with medication? Sorry for the late replies I am barely on here.

@alicianoelle32 I know he does occupational therapy at school, and I don't know the reason why he's not or hasn't gone back to regular therapy, it all started during covid but I don't remember, at the time I wasn't living here and my husband was dealing with it. But no matter what I think he needs both medication and therapy

If it affects education or daily living I would recommend it. My son has been off and on meds since he was 5. I see a completely different person when he is medicated. His aggressive side is non existent, he isn’t all over the place doing a million things at once. He can focus and do his work without the constant meltdowns.

There are several moms on here who have ADHD themselves and it might be worth asking their experience as children and adults with meds vs. no meds. As an educator, I have seen it work wonders for kids. If it’s beginning to impact his education, then I would lean towards meds if it were my own child. Good luck!
