Any moms on here that has a child diagnosed with ADHD & ODD???👀
UPDATE: I just got off the phone with the guidance counselor and she said he was already on the list for evaluation for an IEP. She said they will call me to set up a meeting and then for him to be evaluated to see if he qualifies.
@ltee, I just hope that they approve him to get an IEP. I’m going to also make a “calm down” space for him at home. His therapist said I could try and get some colorful cardboard and write out the rules for home, that way he can see them and we can read them together. I just honestly don’t know what else I can do. I want to make things easier for his teacher, him, and for his class.
@smoore1103, having a diagnosis will probably help a lot with getting an IEP. Good luck!
I would definitely suggest you get him an IEP as soon as possible. My daughter is struggling with school so far too but I think having the IEP in place is very important.
I’m definitely going to look into this. I may have to ask to set up a time where I can come up to the school and talk with his teacher and the guidance counselor there.
@smoore1103, yes as soon as possible. It will not only help with getting him the appropriate assistance, but with an IEP in place he should have some leeway as far as how his opposition is handled.
@smoore1103, Does he have an iep? My son has an emotional support worker in school so he can leave any time to cool down or wind down whenever he needs to. (We've been doing cyber since last year though) his emotional support worker still checks in.
@scream.queen, he doesn’t. I had just heard about IEP above, I’m going to check it out and hopefully this is something that helps him. It was a terrible day yesterday and I just wanted to cry. I want him to do well.
@smoore1103, Definitely have him evaluated and also see what else they offer. Maybe he can get an emotional support worker as well.
Any tips? He has been diagnosed for almost a year now and we had thought we made some progress but after being called to the school and the message his teacher sent yesterday I’m not so sure how much progress we actually made. I know it was a big change for him and that with change some problems will come. I just honestly didn’t think it would be that bad. His teacher has already messaged me this morning.
@smoore1103, My advise would be to get an IEP or 504 plan in place with the school. He can have a plan that’s in place to help him overcome issues. The teacher will be able to use things like a cool down space, fidget toys, charts that help with expressing feelings, etc to help him so he is able to maintain in the classroom and you don’t get calls. TDT is an outside therapist that works in the school, they will be able to step in when he needs the extra assistance while in the school setting so he can remain in class. Does he have intensive in home therapy? My son does both in home and out of home therapy. kids with adhd get overstimulated and also have impulse control issues. he may be overstimulated in a regular class room. My son is in a contained behavioral class for this reason. My son is also on medication.
@smoore1103, it’s something you need to request and set up.
@dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts, he has home therapy every Friday. Or if something comes up I can bring him into his office. Tomorrow is our therapy day after he gets out of school. I’ll run this by his therapist and see what he thinks because he also goes to the school for therapy with other children. Maybe this is something he needs, his class has 15 other children in it and today is the first day all 16 together (the phased in). I know as soon as he gets frustrated or if it gets to loud when he is concentrating he panics at home. Mine is only on Adderall for his ADHD.
