My father in law passed away this morning. We are so devastated. He’s been dealing with some health issues for the past couple of months but we never expected this. We haven’t told our daughter yet. How do you tell a 4 year old that her grandpa died?

need suggestions.... So at work we have a drink thief. Any time we put a drink in the fridge it disappears. I swear I know who it is. So far he's taken drinks from everyone that works in the office, we even put a sign to not take anything you didn't pay for and wrote our names on the drinks. The person I think is taking them works out of the office so we never get to see who is drinking them.
We all have a different definition of “clean”🤢

I’m so sorry to hear of your FIL’s passing. You and your family are in my thoughts today. My MIL died last Wednesday so we just went through this ourselves. I purchased the books Lifetimes, The Endless Story: Explaining Life and Death to Children, and The Invisible String to help my 5 year old through the death of his grandma. They all are fairly non religious which I liked so we could tailor the message to our beliefs.
As for when she passed, we sat him down at home and talked about it as a family. She had cancer and we’d explained that it was a sickness he couldn’t catch from anyone, but made her very sleepy until one day her body was too sick to work anymore and she died.
Reading through some of these other responses, everyone has such good ideas. I hope some of them help you as you go through the grieving process with your daughter. It’s so hard to see them sad for a reason you’re sad about and can’t fix 😢

Some of these have me tearing up just looking at the covers and reading the titles.
My daughter tells me all the time that she doesn't have to miss Grandma Elsa, because she's always close to her. <3 She tells me all the time a bird or a ladybug is her grandma's way of saying hi and letting her know she's there.

So sorry to hear💕💕 my grandpa lived with us and died when my kids were 7, 3 and 1, we were giving some great resources including a book called when dinosaurs die that explains sickness and death to children. The book is fantastic and my kids (older 2) actually still remember it.

I’m so incredibly sorry 😢 that’s so sad. How is your husband holding up? I have no idea how I would tell a 4 year old that’s so hard. Maybe just explain to her that grandpa went to heaven up in the sky and that he’s in a better place now and he will forever be watching her and that he will always love her.

Oh my goodness, I am so very sorry. Such a handsome man, his smile reaches his eyes.
From what I read when my husband's grandmother passed, it is important to talk to them in a place they feel safe, with someone they feel safe with. Don't let them.overhear adults talking about it, don't talk in hushed tones because it seems secretive and bad to them. Try to give them age appropriate facts, like if it was cancer or a heart attack. Don't use terms like grandpa went to sleep or he's resting, it can make them terrified to go to sleep. I'm racking my brain here to try to think of more.

@llcoolkay your situation is a little tougher than mine because my daughter's great grandma was 97 and was clearly slowing down and my daughter could tell. But we did let her know that this is the natural course of life, and her great grandma wouldn't want to live forever in a broken body. That she's completely whole in heaven and with everyone who loves her who passed before her. I think she will mirror your behavior, if everyone is walking around absolutely wailing, she will see it as a great tragedy. If it is taken in stride, she will take it in stride.
I don't mean to sound insensitive when I say that, it's a sudden and very upsetting loss. Just that if you have family members who will really wail, sob, and cry, maybe not expose her to that. Everyone grieves differenly and I don't mean to sound rude, but that will really upset her to see adults around her losing it.

yeah she had no idea he was sick at all. Just by looking at him you’d never know. We’re trying to stay as strong as we can in front of her. She’s seen us crying in the last couple of days and she just says “it’s okay mommy”.

awww. Crying is a-ok, great to show her sadness. I habe a few family members who instantly wail and sob or hit a bottle of something strong when someone dies and it's not healthy for kids.
I believe there are some good books for kids about it, too. Like story books. Let me go check real fast.
