I just wanted to update ya’ll! My 1 year old had his regular check up today and his doctor put in a referral to early intervention because he isn’t walking by himself and for his speech? She’s not happy that he only says two words and also clearly not happy that he isn’t walking alone yet...I’m so bummed out! It makes me feel as if I’m doing something wrong with raising my children 😔

Typically 18m is when they start to worry about walking and talking. She’s a little early

You aren’t doing anything wrong as a parent if your child needs a little extra help! ❤️ Early intervention is a great resource. They will come to your house, do an evaluation in multiple skill areas and make a recommendation. It’s purely up to you what you do after. When we lived in IL, a kiddo needed to be behind by 20% in 2 areas or 30% in a single area for them to recommend services through EI. If your kiddo isn’t at their threshold, then you can decide if you want to follow through with private therapy (they usually have a lower threshold to provide service) or wait and see how the skills progress.

It also took us 2 months to schedule with EI as they have a lot of kiddos they work with. So my recommendation would be to schedule sooner than later and you can always cancel later if you need to.

@humblewarriormama, EI actually called me last week to talk about things and asked if I wanted to do an evaluation so I kindly accepted. They said they have to do 2 different sessions to see if he qualifies. One for paper work and the second is an actual evaluation of what he can and can not do. So today they are coming to do some paper work and then they’ll schedule for the second.

@nunyabuzzz, good luck! No matter what the outcome, your son is still perfect the way he is. ❤️

My oldest didn’t end up qualifying, we were referred at his 9 month check up. But by 2 he clearly needed additional help and he’s now been in speech for 3 years and OT on and off since 2.5. He has a speech disability, sensory struggles, eating quirks and fine motor isn’t where it needs to be. I wish I understood how EI would have been beneficial for us instead of “fixing” the issues myself because maybe then we’d have had an early start in some areas we’re struggling with now.

I would just decline it and say you’ll wait til his 18 month appointment to check him again. A lot happens in those 3 months

Wow seriously? For your 15 month old? That’s unnecessary! The normal age range to walk independently is 9-18 months. My niece didn’t start walking until 18.5 months. And talking usually comes way later. Both of my kids started talking at 14 months but only a few words and that’s considered early. The normal age is 2-3 years.

My kiddo went through speech therapy. It’s honestly amazing. He’s improved so much. But I will say that my doctor didn’t have concerns until he was 2.

Early intervention is like a no harm no foul. If he qualifies for speech and it then great! Follow through it will only benefit him in the long run if he's in the program early and there end up being serious concerns. They test the children regular so after a period of time if he's all caught up they'll dismiss him from the program. I'm a speech therapist and my own daughter went to early intervention for speech, ot, and aba therapy, now she's an average kindergartener and you would never know her previous struggles.

My son didn’t even start trying to walk until he was 15 months. And he didn’t say more than 2 words. He’s just now starting to talk more and he’s 2. I wouldn’t worth.

It's going to be a-ok! There's probably nothing at all to worry about, but if he needs a little help the early interventionists are amazing!

Get a new pediatrician! How ridiculous! Babies don't usually talk until after walking. My dd didn't walk until she was 15 months, however she did have about 10 words in her vocabulary by then. Your child is only 1 tho!

My son didn’t start walking until 14 months and full blown doing it steady until 16 months every child is different, even with his speech he was alittle over 2 years

Old when he started to day words other then mama and dada. He was also evaluated for speech and was just slightly delayed but didn’t need speech therapy but they gave me things to do to help him at home. Just breathe and don’t blame yourself I am sure you’re doing the best you can and sometimes these things are out of our control 💜
