My daughter's school district does student lead conferences. I hate them. During the process the "normal" parent/teacher also happens with the child within ear shot. I've never heard of conferences being conducted this way and it just seems like it maybe discouraging for children that are missing the mark.
This is a vent but I'm also curious if other districts do this as well??

I would think that it would really discourage being frank and honest, especially if they are struggling. I am sure there is a logic as to why they would do it this way, maybe an educator can enlighten us. :D

That's exactly what I was thinking. Kiddo has been struggling with reading. Tbh I think it is related to her delays but the school refuses to acknowledge it since she's "on track" 🙄....she tries really hard but she's missing the mark. I intend to bring it up with the teacher but I can't imagine how other kids feel if their parents don't choose to address things before hand.

Since I have been teaching, it has been the norm in several districts to have students attend conferences. When I had difficult topics to discuss, either behavior or academic related, I would ask the child to go take a seat in the hallway so I could “finish up” with mom or dad. I had a chair set up so that we could still see/supervise the kiddo. It gave us the privacy to discuss things frankly without the student hearing.

I know first hand they do not use this common sense in WL 🙄😑🤦
