anyone have a pit bull? How’s your dog around your babies I hear bad things about them being violent and my bf wants to…

I had a pit that I raised from a puppy (she was 12 weeks old when I got her). She was super sweet, and attached to me. Great with the kids. But by a year old, she became very protective of me and the kids. One of my dogs growled at the small dog near me, and my pit just went off. She attacked the dog that growled and tore her stomach open, ended up killing her. I know she was just doing what dogs do, they become protective. My pit was loved, never caged or used for fighting or chained up, never hit. She wasn’t neglected or abused. I sent her to a pit rescue that could rehome her to someone better suited for her needs.

I will say however, I don’t look at pits differently because of my experience. Any dog can go off if they get agitated enough. For that reason, never leave your dogs and your kids alone..or let your kids crawl all over your dog. Good luck!

My dog is part Pitt. The mother was a full blooded Pitt. She was the sweetest. Around 3 girls all day everyday. My dog also has lab and shepard in him. But he's amazing. Very high energy but hes wonderful with my kids. Very protective of them as well. If we are outside and a stranger walks by he is right next to the kids. And if they step in the yard he barks at them ( he has a big booming bark that scares people off. Hes a sweetheart though. Sometimes people are scared of him when in all reality he is just saying hello or wanting them to come closer so he can sniff/play with them. ) and will want to approach them before they talk to my kids. My aunt and moms ex both have pitts as well and they are wonderful with children. Very laid back. The kids can climb all over them and they dont so much as flinch. My only worry would be if you got an older one because you dont know how they raised it. Pitts are known for dog fighting. And a lot of people buy them for this specific reason. And when they cant fight anymore they ditch them or sell them. But if you raise them from a pup they are the best dogs. Ill be getting a full blood when we move into a bigger house so mine has a companion that can keep up with him. But we will get it as a pup. Pitts are my favorite dogs. They are smart kind loyal playful and big ol goofballs. You just have to raise them right. And if you rent be careful because a lot of landlords wont accept them. We have been lucky and our landlord allows them.

It is funny how this particular breed of dog is negatively viewed/misinformed in general but in the Vet world, most of us fear those little breeds that tend to lunge at yah.

Lol, at least for me because tiny dogs get spoiled so much. Lap dogs can be crazy or cute😂 of course, it all comes down to how the training is and what the owners expose/not expose them to.

Sheltered dogs with minimal social interactions are the ones that do poorly.

The Master groomer who trained me had a pitbull girl ,she was about 105 pounds of pure muscle ,she didn’t have children . Her dog was well trained . 1 day in her yard her and her husband were playing around and the dog her own pitbull went behind the husband and bit the shit out of his leg from behind knee and under was horrific they had for yrs she was never aggressive and always very sweet she lived to be 15 yrs old but,out of the blue she attacked her husband ,like I said all dog’s have the potential to attack but,all breeds don’t have the strength to kill or cause life long damage or severely injure with 1 wrong bite /move

@ajaecymone184, I’m a Professional pet groomer for 23 yrs any breed has a potential to attack ! Did you know even a Cat can and has suffocated newborns due to the scent of milk breath ,,, all animals should be supervised . I’ve been around show dogs to dog’s in the humane society that I volunteered when I first became a groomer . There is a saying train the owner as well as the dog . In Miami Fl where I live they are banned for over 25 yrs or so and yes many due to neglectful owners and people using this breed to fight / make money off etc. Any breed you are considering be cautious do your homework ,do you have time for a dog? Especially with small children not all dog’s like small children or even some people 😂 Dog’s have the mentality of a 3 yr old . I personally wouldn’t get a pitbull when having small children . And yes I’ve seen a chihuahua attack a groomer way faster and no warning than big dog’s and I’ve seen a cat attack and hang on to a groomers arm and not let go

Its all in how you raise a dog, no matter the breed. Personally love pits, i had one for 9 years, from the day he was born. He was never aggressive towards anyone he knew. He was taught to protect our yard, which he did, without harming anyone. He had a way of letting people know they were going to far. He never growled or showed his teeth at any child EVER. He was the biggest baby and sweet as can be.

My kids grandpa on their dads side has a pit and he doesn’t hurt the kids but every once in a while he will growl and like try to snap at them so I Dnt let them be around him anymore . He also bit me before and their dad and also no matter what animal you have , they can turn on u and become aggressive at any point in time trained or not .. I’ve heard of families tht had a dog for all it’s life and suddenly it became aggressive and had to get taken by the pound .

The dogs I had before children I trusted from day one with caution but I would never trust a puppy, no matter the breed, until my babies are older. We rescued a stray last month and I barely could breathe the first few weeks he was around since I didn't know him. But it takes time, training, patience, etc, no matter the breed when you get a puppy. Puppies are cute and sweet but they bite, jump, gnaw, and even the sweetest puppy will scratch or hurt a baby unintentionally in the first year so extra vigilance is needed if you choose to get one. The more effort and time out into them in the first year, the better they are as grown pups. Any breed can be good or bad, it's all in the upbringing. Best of wishes for whatever choice you make!

They are not violent unless they are trained to be. My cousin has 3 and I can leave my baby there and all 3 make sure he safe. I love pit bulls

I looooved my pittie. Like the above comments it's mostly how you raise them but they were loved because of how gentle they are with kids.

Dogs, when properly trained, can make great pets in any home.

Introduce, train and always trust your instincts. Never just let your kids handle them roughly as well. Teach young kids how to be gentle and you should be fine. That specific breed has a bad rep due to humans and improper training. Good luck. Any dog could potentially harm if given the wrong upbringing and bad treatment.

🙋‍♀️ pitbull mom of 9 years. It's all in how you raise your dog. Any dog can be violent, not just a pitbull. I taught her to protect my boys and myself if needed. Other than that she's the biggest baby ever.
