Should Oklahoma Schools Charge Students for Forgetting Masks?
Some Oklahoma schools will now be charging students $1 for every time they forget a mask!!
A part of me understands this because it’s important but at the same time to charge them is ridiculous! At my daughters elementary school she has a neck gator the school provided and it stays in her desk at all times. If for some reason she was to forget her mask from home then she’d get a paper mask at the door and she could either wear that all day or throw it away and get her gator out and use it as long as it’s returned the next morning. My sons high school also have boxes of disposable masks at the doors for anyone who forgets one. My son has never forgotten his mask, and my daughter only has once but either way I just don’t agree with them charging the kids now. Some of those kids struggle to even have the money to eat.

Not to mention that most schools got funding for the extra covid expenses. At least they all did around me.

I’m sure they did as well. I’m not sure what schools are and aren’t implementing this yet. Leave it to my state to be stupid 🤦🏻♀️

Are they using the $1 to buy the kid a mask? That just seems very arbitrary to me.

The $1 is for a new mask. If they don’t have the dollar then they must call a parent and go home. They said too many schools are depleting their mask supplies and too many kids are throwing away masks.
Most schools however are using the disposable so I thought you were supposed to throw them away.

That’s absolutely ridiculous. I understand the importance of a mask but like you said in the last sentence some parents are even struggling with the lunch money.

I decided to keep my kids home for distance learning. But at the beginning of the school year, the in person students were asked to keep a spare mask in their backpacks at all times, as well as send one in a labeled zip lock bag for their teacher to hold for them. They were all also given lanyards for their masks to always keep them around their neck if they ever need to take them off, like to eat. So in my opinion this would understandable if it happened at our school since the faculty has done everything to make sure they have masks. They are required. Also, the parents need to be making sure their kids have masks on when they leave the house in the morning.

I agree that it’s the parents responsibility to make sure their child has a mask on. Our schools gave every student a mask to wear and it stays in their desk or locker for backup. Also like I said our schools have the disposable boxes for just in case. It’s not very often they have to use them. I’m also a small town and it wasn’t specific about which schools were doing it. Maybe the larger cities are having issues I’m just not sure.

If the 1$ is to help the school provide extra masks to the kids who forget or even cant afford proper masks, I'd be okay with it, but I see where your coming from.
