My 4 year old got one earlier this year when I bought my 8 year old the regular switch. He loved it, but after abt 2 weeks my 4 year old wanted the regular one simply because "the controllers don't slide off like Acelins does" so his dad got it for him lol.
I’d only do it if he’s into gaming. My husband got the traditional switch for our girls last year and they’ve played it literally 7 times maybe and we spent so much money on games 😩. My girls aren’t really gamers tho they like Roblox but that’s about it.

Honestly that's up to you to decide if he's responsible enough for it. You could always get the carrying case and protector for it.
