Anyone feel like a classroom that serves k-2 is appropriate? I personally don’t think kids in different age ranges like that should be in one classroom. To me it’s inappropriate socially and academically. Just me?

Multigrade classrooms are pretty common in a self-contained setting. There are usually many classroom aides in with the teacher, so students typically don’t mix with other students who aren’t around the same age or who don’t have the same needs. Our self-contained room is K-6. Kids rarely are groups with kids outside of their grade level. Occasionally we will have multigrade groups for social skills instruction and those groups are formed on the needs of the students.

I'm just trying to figure out how they would teach or structure lesson plans for a group like this. 2nd graders are way ahead academically (usually) than kindergartners... socially I think it's fine, as I child I had friends that I played with that were substantially younger than me (we all lived on the same street and all played together.)

Is your son in the classroom full time or part time. I can imagine that the teacher to student ratio is heightened in a behavioral classroom, if not it should absolutely be and something you should bring up for the safety of your child and others.

Right now they are virtual but when they go back yes it’s full time. As of right now they have 8 students and the most they can have is 14.

They only reason I even knew that the grades were different is because they sent me the wrong federal survey card for another student and it had his grade. So I asked her if she had mixed grades in her classroom and is it something they were doing for virtual or is it something they do in the classroom. She said it’s always been like this. Because he is academically above the other 2nd graders he only has one class with the whole group right now and the rest is one on one with her. of course that will change once back into the classroom.

@dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts yes. It's not uncommon for behavior and other children with IEPs to be in classroom that is mixed. I did my internship in a district and observed the same thing .

My daughter would do fine with it, she’s very social and loves playing with older kids. She’s in kindergarten but she’s turning 6 next week so she’s an older student. And she’s always been ahead of herself. Kids learn from their peers and she’s always learned from older kids growing up. But every kid is different.

But what about the older kids? They don't need to be learning at a kindergarten level.

@luna_bear, well no, that’s up to the teacher to make sure all the kids are learning at their appropriate level. They wouldn’t give the 2nd graders kindergarten work.

Let me add that this is a contained behavioral classroom. My son is in second grade. He is bipolar along with other diagnoses. He is aggressive and impulsive. I can’t begin to imagine what harm he could do to someone smaller like a kindergartner if he were to have an episode. They group them k-2 and 3-5. I just feel like it’s inappropriate all around.

Hmmm, that’s interesting. My GF is a school psychologist, I’ll ask her if that’s a common practice.

even when I worked at the school as a special education teacher my we went by ages so my kids was all 5 years olds with ADHA and/ or bipolar. Now one I had a small group of 2 years and 8 years olds in my class and it was a mess lol.

@misr_chick_plus_8, I just can’t imagine kids k-2 and 3-5 being in a classroom together And what type of things and I mean negative things they could learn from one another or even be involved in. Academically they aren’t behind but their behaviors from a mental health issue has determined they need to be in a contained classroom. I think back to how my son changed so much from k-2. So thinking about such a young child being in a classroom with a 2nd grader bothers me. Thinking about when he is in 3rd grade and he and 5th graders are in the same classroom is going to bother me.

I share this with you all because I know I’m one of the parents not taking the traditional path of education. My son goes to a K-8 Montessori Public Charter School. I chose it for the individualized more hands on curriculum, smaller class sizes, the multi age classrooms for peer socialization and leadership opportunities, and the fact that my special needs child is full inclusion.

We are so desensitized to what education should look like that we don’t see the other methods and how they might work for other children. Not everyone learns the same way and I found what I believe will work best for mine and I’m not judging anyone else on whatever they choose to do for theirs. It just happens that he’ll be in the same class from 1-3 grade and I think it’ll be fantastic for his social skills, the teacher will get to really know our family, how he learns and a different sense of community that isn’t at your traditional public school.

I thought she meant kids that are in kindergarten are mixed in with 2nd graders lol. But I agree with you, I was with the same class 4th grade to 8th grade and loved it.

I agree with you.

It doesnt make any sense to me as to why a school would think that it would work.

Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no, his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me and did something else with an other girl.... and it's 10:51 am now and he hasn't texted me at all. and after he dropped me off I texted him saying what I felt and nothing. I don't know if I'm over reacting or what or what should i do. do i wait until he text me?
