You can take a car seat on the plane as long as you've bought a seat to put the car seat in. A 3 yr old you have buy them a seat. If you didn't buy a seat for the car seat, it's checked luggage, your airline might make you check it for free

Every thing she said! You have to buy a seat after they turn 2. If you can install the car seat it helps them be less squirmy on the plane rides if not you can check with your luggage or at the gate.

The 10 month old can sit on your lap but not the 3 year old. It makes it much easier (and safer) when they have their own seat. You can check car seats at the gate along with a stroller or wagon.

3 year old needs their own seat, they're not allowed on your lap. They can sit next to you in their own seat if you'd like to check the carseat with your suitcase so you're not lugging it around. Or you can bring it on the plane with you and they can sit in it in the seat next to you. There's no extra charge to bring a carseat, whether you check it or bring it on. Same goes for a stroller. I usually check the car seat as soon as i get to the airport, but I keep the stroller with me and I "gate check" that. Which means you can bring it with you the whole way up to the plane, then when you're boarding they store it on the plane for you.

Anyone over the age of 2 must have their own purchased seat. Sadly, they stopped giving child discounts on most airlines many years ago. There are no charges for checking strollers or car seats. You can have a diaper bag as an extra carry on for no charge. I would wear my son in his Tula through security and gate check his stroller as we boarded. It worked well, even when I traveled with my sister who was a little older.

I highly recommend investing $40 in a car seat carrier so the car seat has protection while being handled on/off the plane. Luggage handlers mess up car seats all the time. They messed up my sons car seat on our last trip. Only cost them $325 to replace the car seat...but really sucked as a parent to get home to have a broken car seat. Now I protect that seat as much as I can and suggest everyone else do the same.
