I heard this happened after the new update

There's a name for that kind of thing. Its called cookies. Have you ever been to a website and there is a disclaimer saying they use cookies? Basically your phone tracks your internet searches and that's why you see ads for things you looked up in places where ads would be. Like this website, or if you go to like the yahoo home page or something, you'll see ads catered to what you've searched in the past. You can Google it for more info

All of your internet activity is being collected and linked to your email address. So weird yes, but also normal.
