I get that. But I think you need to step back for a moment and think about what he’s venting about. Guys need someone to talk to as well, and you also have to remember they are only hearing one side of the story.
Tell him you don’t appreciate it and that he needs to open up to you as well. Relationships need communication, but that doesn’t mean he needs to share your guys business with his buddies too.

He has a right to vent and obviously by him venting he gave then the right to comment on it & they did so.
I personally would be looking into it though, the fact that he told YOU this happened sounds like he's trying to tell YOU something without actually saying it. You should sit down and have a serious discussion about your relationship with him, stating his friends said that about you should also make you ponder what HE said about you.

No I wouldn’t. He’s allowed to vent. And his friends and whoever are allowed to have their opinions as well. Definitely keep the communication open and don’t be angry at him. Just try to talk about what needs to happen to make things work.
