I just need to rant a bit.

And you never need to freaking explain why you will not be available. That will only lead to “making up stories”.

I wish I knew this with my old job. They would force me to come in because nobody else would cover the shifts. Most of my coworkers took the day off for dates and crap. I did this for a month with no break. It was too much. After that month passed by they still expected me to work 7 days a week. I told them I’m gonna collapse if I work one more day or week. I didn’t have time off in that month. My laundry was backed up. Every time I thought I could wash my clothes, I would get a call that I had to come in. So I had to go to work in dirty socks and clothes. They gave me s*** for being a minute late. I would tell them well uh it was supposed to be my day off. It took me an hour and a half to get there. One bus and 2 trains. I quit that job not long after that. After all that I did and my coworkers and boss wasn’t appreciative. I was only supposed to work 4 days a week, not 7. I’ll never do overtime like that again at another job. It was way too stressful. I wish I knew this, even if they threatened me I should have been like I can’t make it.

I worked at a daycare and also lived ridiculously close so if someone called out (especially openers) I was typically the first they would call. I loved the owner and office staff though, although I accepted most of the extra shifts they made sure I knew i didn't have to or they would leave me as the last person they'd call if I had already covered a fair amount. I was a good worker and they made it clear they didn't mind paying me the overtime I got but they hated to see me working so much when other people just refused to go in. I even had a few time i would have gone in early but they didn't want to call me so someone from the office would go in early. I miss them so much!

Everybody needs a break now and then and no one should make am employee feel bad for needing a break!

My job just did this to me. I took 2 days off. Requested a MONTH ago. They gave me a hard time about it when I came back. Saying I had to stay extra hours Bc I was off for 2 days. Those were unpaid days mind you. My choice. I could careless about the money I’m missing from those 2 days.

My moms company is the same way. When one of her employees tested positive for COVID-19, they laid off my mom for only 1 week with no pay. However, my mom got tested as well and came back negative which I was happy about. When my mom wanted to get some days off due to my brothers issues, they denied it because her company already had understaffed employees. I was so mad because it was stressful for my mom, and she’s already 60 and plus with the stress at her work wasn’t even worth it. I can’t stand my moms work.

Preach it, I worked for a couple of companies who was so ungrateful and very unappreciative when I helped their asses out. One day I got asked to stay and help out with inventory, mind you I’ve already worked my 8 hours so it would of been overtime. Literally the following week I got yelled at by the manager who had asked me to stay and help. So from then on I never helped his ass out or come in early when people didn’t come in. I was pissed and my coworker never helped his ass out either because of it. She was there when he asked me to stay and help and she was also there when he yelled at me for staying
