Has anyone previously been a swimming instructor or has knowledge about teaching about teaching kids to swim in another way.

My kiddo is 5.5 and LOVES to swim. She took to the water naturally when she was smaller, has been swimming (dog paddle) without assistance since she was 3. We've always made her keep her swim arms on because of her age when she's swimming in my parents backyard or at other places.

We've skipped swimming lessons this year but she can now swim under water (holding her nose). She needs to start learning strokes and diving but I'm not sure which to do first. Or if I should teach her to swim without holding her nose underwater first.

She has a natural talent and I just want to keep her on track since idk when I'll be able to get her into swimming lessons again.

As someone who learned to swim when they were young ( like 2/3 ) I would

Probably go for the learning to swim without holding her nose . To do most strokes ( freestyle , butterfly , backstroke , sidestroke) you need to be able to move your arms and legs doing the stroke so holding the nose would

Hinder that (I’m not sure that made sense )

But.. idk about teaching a five year old you hold their breath or move their head side to side to breathe.

That's a good point. She has asthma so that definitely restricts her from holding her breath for periods of time so I think I'll encourage the side.to side breathing

I never learned any strokes. I lacked the coordination so I only know how to swim under water lol. I can swim the entire length of my parents pool though on two breaths 😂

With my son we put weighted water toys on the pool steps and he puts his head under/ swims underwater along the step to grab them
