I was 5 (kindergarten) we a new family moved in next door they were a biracial family black dad Asian mom. The girl and I became friends at school and were playing in our yards one day. Her dad came home and said “did I tell you that you could be friends with her?” To his daughter. After that we could only play together at school. She was my best friend for 2 years until we moved but only at school.I didn’t understand and had to ask my parents to which they taught me about how people in the past were treated and it still goes on today. Fast forward to middle school (we have already adopted a mixed child into our family) my school and another school which I attended for a year and 1/2 before had merged into one middle school. The first school was country school maybe 4 black students in the whole k-8. The new school was less whites. You can guess the clash. Being because I moved to that school before the schools merged I already now had friends from both schools. When the race wars of 8th grade started I had “N lover” in sharpie written on my locker. Hang them high on other lockers so much more. I walked my baby sister who I was 13 at the time she was two around the neighborhood and kids there rocks and dirt at us yelling N lover. I picked her up and ran as fast as I could home to my parents who then called the cops. They had a huge conference at the school where all parents had to come. They spoke about what was happening, had speakers come and talk as well as police. By the end of the year after some kids ended up in juvi and others mended their actions. Fast forward a year later. We are now all in high school I tell you it was a different world by then. Everyone got along and it was like the race war never happened. Why because the school forced us to spend time together and hear eachother stories.

It’s definitely taught. Had my parents in that first occurrence not sat me down to explain how unfair life was when they grew up for black people and twisted it to something else I can’t imagine what my life would have looked like. My parents told me do not be mad at the girls dad because he may feel hurt and not trust us. That it was ok for me to just be a good friend and a kind person to them even if they didn’t in return because one day they just might change their mind by my actions.

Lol, people kill me. Stay at home mom and grocery store cashier really gonna tell their child that they are smarter than anyone? What I really wanna know is, how did that white girl end up at the sleep over, did her parents not know she was going to black people's house?

This was a post from someone I know. She’s a psychologist, her mother was a registered nurse. This happened in the early 90’s...
