How do you explain to an almost 4 year old that a pet is sick and may need to be put down? One of our cats may have cancer and she may need to be put down soon as a blister is forming in her eye, as well as all over her face, and who knows where internally. I’m heartbroken about it, and they were really close until she started to slow down in April. She’s my only girl (aside from 1 fish).

I bet there are good resources online. My daughter just dealt with the death of her great grandmother, but she is a lot older than your kiddos.

The advice I read was to talk about the illness in a normal voice, don't talk in hushed tones like it is a secret bad thing. Talk to them in a place they feel comfortable and secure. Don't use words like "going to sleep" because it can scare them about sleeping.

He used to take naps on her when he was little, like a pillow

that's a great start. And it is funny how kids adapt super fast. My daughter was incredibly close with her great grandma, but she tells me all the time she isn't sad because her grandma is close to her.

They will probably handle it better than the adults.

It's hard to lose a.beloved pet. I am sorry. :(

I’m a wreck, lol. I know it’s the right choice for her, she’s not doing well.
