Has anyone ever paid for a doctor out of pocket? I want to do this with my therapist but I'm not sure really how to ask him. He took my previous insurance but doesn't accept the new insurance my husband carries because they won't allow him to join the network for whatever reason. Anyways I'm willing to pay up to $250 a session but obviously don't want to start by saying that lol

Yeah I pay for my online therapist out of pocket.

I have . Maybe Ask if he accepts payment before each session or does a payment plan , then ask how much it’ll be and go from there ?

I did after I started a new job and was waiting to be eligible for insurance. I asked him if he offered a sliding scale for those without insurance and he set a reasonable fee until my insurance kicked in.

Sliding scale was the word I was thinking of 😂 . It was on the tip of my tongue

Yep. You just ask what their cash price is for out of pocket pay. Not everyone has insurance, so he has dealt with it before I’m sure. Just let him know you want to keep him as your therapist, but your insurance won’t cover it. I paid a therapist out of pocket once. It was only like $75 a session. I doubt your insurance would even pay out $250 a session, so definitely don’t say what you would pay until after he gives you a price. My parents pay out of pocket for all doctors visits because it’s cheaper than their insurance. All doctors have been able to provide them with a cash price.

Just call and see. I would ask if they offer a cash discount.

Just ask about a cash price. My BIL sees a psychiatrist for $50 a visit. He doesn't take any type of insurance.

Thanks everyone! I sent him a message hopefully he'll respond soon. mental health care was completely free with my previous insurance and I guess I was going off what I would charge in my field. I never realized therapy was so cheap!

Most actually prefer not having to deal with insurance. I’ve found cash prices on average to be about 40% less
