I need to rant for a second. My fiances best friends little sister is an addict. I met her when she was 13 and she was already smoking weed then and ahe has progressively gotten worse over the years and at one point was heavily using. Her boyfriend had overdosed and passed away a few years ago. Shes now 21 and pregnant. She had been trying to get clean and was using subs once a day. Now that shes pregnant she has upped her dosage and shes also buying other things off the street. We went and saw the friend yesterday and she was there. Talking about how excited she is and how much she wants this baby with a cigarette in one hand and a vape in the other taking turns hitting them. She dropped her purse and a ton of pills fell out. No one said anything to her. Her mom makes excuses and says she cant work cuz shes pregnant and it'll be bad for the baby if she stops using now. My thing is I get that she was an addict before she got pregnant. But why increase the drug use after finding out? Wean yourself off of those things. They already plan on keeping the baby in nicu for two weeks after she is born due to withdrawal. It just breaks my heart that the poor baby is going to be born hurting and in pain. And shes going to get the baby and go home like its no big deal. No punishment for her. No one telling her that its not okay and what she's doing is wrong. It just makes me sad. Why isint cps involved? Our friends girlfriend has called them and all she was told was that they couldnt do anything untill after the child is born. Its not my place to say anything to her and she can get crazy so i kept my mouth shut about it. But the fact that her family who she lives with is acting like its no big deal blows my mind.

@lets-get-this-bread, Yep, it’s all in the fine print of the documents you sign when you register at the hospital and sometimes it’s in your OB’s paperwork, too.

If they have drugs in their systems (they will) will they take the baby right then and there then?

yes they will, they will not let her leave the hospital with that baby!

Definitely call CPS. When you do say you're extra concerned because the family is enabling the addict

Our friend lives with her. Shes in and out and hardly there unless shes sleeping but if I were to call cys then i would be calling on them as well and they are amazing parents stuck in a hard situation. I would never want to do that to them so thats kinda why im stuck on what to do. My fiancees girlfriend has called and now shes scared that once the baby is there they will investigate her as well. Shes got nothing to hide but the system is so screwed up shes just at a loss for how to handle this.

Cps can't protect a fetus. I think that since it's been brought to their attention, they'll step in as soon as the baby is born. But the hospital, knowing the mother is a drug user, will test the baby for drugs, if positive, they have to notify cps

They won’t now because not much they can do but once baby is born call cps and keep calling but with baby in the nicu for withdrawal they might keep testing her too to kk sure she is clean before taking baby home
Poor poor baby!

@madmummy. That's what i think too. Shes saving to get a place but she doesn't think she will get the baby if hes not there with her cuz she technically doesnt have any rights. (Its his sister whos pregnant and they aren't married) and shes his moms aide so thats how she makes her money is by taking care of her. Shes looking for other clients though so she can work outside of the house and make sure she can pay everything on her own incase this is a breaking point for them. She doesnt want her kids around stuff like this anymore and has been considering telling him that shes moving and he can come if he likes and if not the door will be open for him if he decides hes ready later on.

@madmummy. There is no need for anyone to call cps when the baby is born, trust me, the hospital is obligated to do so if the baby is born with drugs in her system. And cps will have the mother tested for drugs regularly, and then check out her living conditions before giving her the baby, they don't want the baby in a bad environment

She is likely already “flagged” by her OB, the baby will be tested as soon as born. The baby will likely spend several weeks in the hospital going through withdrawals as you know. My nephew was born with extreme withdrawal. It is the most heartbreaking thing you will ever see. But CPS probably will fail this child, unfortunately. Sad world we live in.

Her older sister was the same. She was on the same drugs that she is on now and the baby was born with withdrawal. I'm not close to her and neither are our friends but i know she did end up with the baby when she was feeling better because i saw her at a birthday party and she had her. Im not sure what the situation was but she ended up being taken and placed for adoption right before her first birthday. They arent on speaking terms with her right now because of some other messed up stuff so they cant really ask her what to expect. I just want to see this baby have a good life and not be stuck living with a mom whos not going to care for her properly. She lives with our friends so I know my friend will care for the baby as needed but we dont know how the mom is going to be with her and everyone else or if shes even coming back to that house after she has her. Shes been in and out for years now.

If the drug addict mom is living in the house, the baby won't be released to that house. The mother will have to stay away for the baby to go there and continue to stay away. It doesn't matter if she is prescribed a drug, they have certain blood levels that ate considered "therapeutic," if your blood level is above that, then it's a problem, below that. There's a lot of court involved if the mom wants her baby, visitation, custody, a lot of stuff. I know in some places, cps is serious about babies born dependent on drugs.
Your friend is not doing his sister any favors by enabling her, smh, she needs to be given a dose of reality, she's not gonna see the need to change when everyone is making excuses for her. Her family isn't doing her any favors by treating her the way they are.
Your friend's fiance though, she needs to make a really hard decision, she needs to remove her children from that situation, so what if he refuses to go? Let him choose his addict sister over his children, but someone needs to choose those children, and his fiance is the only one who will do it it seems.
Call cps and ask them what is the routine for babies who test positive for drugs at birth. Call the hospital and find out what happens. Tell the sister that her baby is going to get taken away. I mean, there's history and evidence with the older sister. Someone needs to break up the fantasy land she lives in.
Her history sounds sad, why was she using drugs of any kind at 13? Did her mom fail her and now she feels guilty about it so she doesn't tell her she's doing things that are wrong? That mother isn't doing her daughter any good. It is worse for the baby if the mother continues to use drugs, she needs to stop like 5 months ago, smh. You can call your local precinct and find out what they can do. But she's not taking any "illegal" drugs right?
I feel so bad for that poor baby, born addicted to drugs, she's probably gonna be in the nicu for more than 2 weeks, maybe they meant a minimum of 2 weeks? That baby, if she continues the way she is, is going to be born low birth weight. The hospital have to get the baby off drugs, plus get the baby's weight up, plus handle whatever conditions the baby will have due to drug exposure in utero. I mean 🤷🏿♀️ it could be 2 weeks, but I doubt it highly... I'm not always right though, very interested in how this all plays out
