Has anyone else heard that distance learning will become the new norm? I live in the Northeast and it's not unusual for us to have snow days for 3-5 days at a time during a bad winter.

With that being said our district has talked about implementing distance learning during extended snow days and other circumstances. Technology is certainly thriving and where I live education is taken VERY seriously (mass has been in the top for education for a while now) I live just over the border in CT. So this will be the new norm here. How about where you are??

That's interesting but I'm not surprised when it comes to Florida. When I lived there I was adamant that my daughter wasn't going to go to public schools there. If I would have stayed there she probably would have ended up homeschooled.

I’m a teacher in IL. We are a 1:1 technology district and prior to this happening, our district was already working on creating an eLearning plan for snow days, so I’m pretty certain it will be the case moving forward... Our governor has also said it would be wise for us to prepare for both in person and eLearning instruction for the start of next school year 🙄. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few months..

I couldn't agree more. Honestly other mothers on here made me think of the original post. Yes young children shouldn't be forced BUT at the same time the parent needs to put in more of an effort...if the child doesn't eat dinner there are some nights where you just tell them to sit down and eat🤷‍♀️. Too many parents are giving up too quickly in this situation and as much as they think it only affects them or their child it doesn't. Now their teacher will have to do twice as much work to get them up to speed and the children of parents that did keep them on track will have to have that much more repetition because their peers are behind...these are the same parents that would be throwing fits if their child was held back because they weren't up to speed in the fall 🙄. Technology is a part of life so idk why they aren't embracing it with their children's education as well.

I just have to ignore some of the stuff I see here haha.😬 But you are absolutely right. There is already a large gap between our higher achieving learners and the students who are behind, and this could very likely make the gap even bigger. I teach 3rd grade. I have students achieving at a 4th grade level, and many others still at a kindergarten and 1st grade level. We work really hard to differentiate according to individual levels, but when there are 25-30 kids in a classroom and only 1 of me, it’s tough to do all the time or for everything..

as a parent I appreciate you! I love when teachers teach to the individual. My daughter is in Pre-K 4 she's going to kindergarten next year( which is the new first grade) she's already reading, can count to 50, and actively working on her sight words. The only reason she didn't go to kindergarten last year was because of her lacking socially ( she had hearing issues early on, was a late talker, became shy, etc) she's caught up socially now and is way ahead academically. To leave kindergarten kids are expected to count to only 30🤦...at this rate my kid will be ahead of the curve so much it scares me. I almost started to apply for school positions because I like the benefits compared to the private sector but the pay won't be enough to deal with this shit storm that is coming and unfortunately the parents will be the ones to blame for most of the problems but will be the first ones to complain 🙄

That’s great that she’s already reading! Here, by the end of kindergarten, kids are expected to count to 100. Your district may have some special programs for gifted or academically advanced children. There is a gifted program here that begins in 4th grade.. Parents are always first to complain. 😬 I’m a very non confrontational person, so I usually end up giving in within reason, but who knows what things will look like next school year..
