For everyone’s record, a child can be diagnosed with ADHD as early as 4 years old. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has guidelines for ages 4-18 but symptoms must be present by 12. You can start with your ped but taking your child to a psychologist for an evaluation is the best step. 4 years is the earliest the will test for ADHD.

Generally they won’t diagnose ADHD until around 4-5. Some places won’t even test until 6. What are your concerns that would make you feel your 18 month old has adhd?

@momofgirlsx2, sounds pretty normal for her age. If you believe there is an issue bring it up with your ped. My son was diagnosed with misconduct of emotions at 2 by a psychologist and started play thereapt. I never thought he had ADHD but he was eventually diagnosed with ADHD at 4.

@anicole3285 ok u clearly do not understand ADHD at all. And if your son has it you really need to research it forreal a child w ADHD clearly can NOT sit still. And obviously u under this if I give him sleep meds. Yes having a child w behavior issues completely sucks n fucking frustrating shit I have 4!! But please do take advice from @dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts cause she knows what shes talking bout.she is very well educated and deals with it also.

my oldest son has adhd and at that age was pretty calm strangely enough lol my 18 month old is a lil wild child though she sounds pretty normal just keep an eye on it. also adhd isn't always being hyper they can consitrate but it's like hyper consintrating where whatever has their attention is the only thing they can think about or talk about. just watch out as she grows but as of right now she sounds pretty normal for her age

@motherof3dragons, that’s normal for them to not medicate right off. A diagnosis can be made as early as 4 yrs old and they recommend behavioral therapy first. A lot of medication they use for ADHD isn’t geared for the younger ages and most they have to be 5/6 in order to take and for insurance to cover.

Our pedi said not to give mine any sugary drinks or snack, and to watch out for Red #40 in the ingredients!! It makes them hyper. I literally asked about my daughter today because she's off the wall hyper. Lol

Who in the hell diagnosed your child this is 100% not accurate your child is way to young for that , a Real doctor would tell you that your child is to young , im a nurse not a doctor but i know for a fact they only start diagnosed when they are close to being in school

@anicole3285, YOUR INFORMATION IS OUTDATED FROM 2011. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️. Regardless of when you were researching it’s outdated information that you speak of. The guidelines for diagnosing adhd starts at 4. They don’t have to be older or school age. They still have to go through the same in-depth testing and it’s just as accurate. Your “alota” research you did is based on outdated information.

@anicole3285, you got mad at your son because YOU misplaced his medicine that helps him sleep and said “ADHD or not I have rules”. Like he can just turn it off and has control over it 🤦🏽‍♀️

@dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts got it twisted. VERY MUCH. Adhd or nlt he can stay in his bed when its bedtime and not come out every 5 seconds. Literally every 5 seconds. No one said SLEEP. He has adhd and even if he didnt and had sleep issues i wouldnt be mad because he couldnt sleep lol. Plus i wasn't even mad. I was irritated because of him coming out and doing what he wants and i keep having to tell him about 30x till he actually listened. And the situation. 👌

My kids pediatrician won't diagnose until 4, but even then prefers them to be older for a more solid diagnosis.

I have a 17m old but she seems to be as wild as any other baby her age lol. I honestly wouldn't know how you would even tell. They are all in to everything at this age.

My sons pediatrician said she doesn't like to diagnose kids until at least 7 years old. I'm sure each doctor is different but it seems like 1st grade is the average time most will start the discussion and diagnosis.

@momofgirlsx2, every child is different. Some are energetic, some are chill. Your concern may be valid but it’s too early to test for ADHD. That doesn’t mean she won’t be diagnosed with it as she gets older. In my area adolescence mental health is hard to come by. Each practice has their own set of rules and policies on when they will test and diagnose. I always knew my son was different. I didn’t know what it was but as he got older I knew he needed help. So I made sure to find a psychologist that was educated in the adolescent field and had him evaluated. As I said I took my son in at 2, but his symptoms were different than what you have described. My son is 6 and has 3 diagnoses.
