It’s national adoption awareness month and as an adoptee I feel compelled to make sure our voices are elevated. Adoption is not happiness and light and unicorns poop rainbows. Sit down. Listen to adoptees. We are the authority on adoption. .

This picture is a perfect representation of what it feels like to be an adoptee. Many people take for granted a little thing called Genetic Mirroring. Looking at the faces of your parents, siblings, cousins, aunts etc and seeing your face or features reflected back at you. While there was times in my life I was told I looked like my adopted mom, the truth is. People saw what they wanted to. The first time I saw a face that looked like mine was when my sister opened the door and I walked through it almost a year ago. Imagine going 36 years and NEVER seeing a face that looked like yours. Hands that looked like yours. Voices that sounded like yours.

Need To Know

Gosh this explains perfectly how I feel! Or having some quirk that is strange to your adopted family, but everyone in your bio family has the same quirk? Seeing the features of your children in the family around you. Or having the "family nose" or "family chin" and actually being able to determine what that is. Having a connection with a group of people and know where you came from. The greatest relief was finally knowing my medical history and potentially what I had to look out for as I grew older. What I would look like when I got older. Knowing that I wasn't dating someone I was related to because when you're adopted you just NEVER know!!!

My friend was adopted very young, Asian, by a white couple who ended up getting divorced and her life has been such a struggle. They never tried to introduce her to her culture or teach her anything about it and it’s impacted her significantly. She’s always had to battle so many conflicting emotions 😔💗

Now that ancestry has opened up so many interesting doors, I feel this. My cousin who has no idea who she is because she was adopted and we are still looking for those answers. But she can now look at me and say “ah ha, someone who wears glasses with a kinda long nose that kind of looks like me.” I look forward to unlocking this mystery not just because I’m curious but because I want her picture to be a little clearer.

Мама двоих (младенец)

I feel this. My brother and I were adopted into a white family as infants bc my mother was...ill equipped. Growing up like that was rough and even as an adult and knowing my biological family I still don't feel like I belong there either. But my boys can look at us and see exactly where they come from and in that way we are so blessed.
