@_t_a_y_t_a_y_ ABA has evolved a lot over the years... yes what you were told was the case, but now it can be different and uses more positive reinforcement.
ABA is definitely a controversial practice, especially if you speak to autistics that actually received it. (I belong to the aspie community on amino and ABA gets mentioned quite a bit) but it really does depend on what kind of ABA the child receives.
In my limited experience with ABA my nephew enjoyed it with one therapist and we saw great gains, but after the therapist left, he no longer liked ABA and there was no longer a benefit for him to receive it.
In the long run, it's all up to you mama, nobody knows your son better than you do, but there's no harm in researching all the avenues of different therapies. All autistics are different and what works for one doesn't necessarily mean it will work for another. Which is why there are so many different kinds of treatments and therapy.

yes that is true. I always say the same what harms one might not harm another what wrongs for 1 might not work for another
