Seriously, I don’t understand how an almost 4 year old hasn’t figured out that bedtime means going to sleep every night... it’s the one and only constant routine thing we do in this family. My 8 year old has no problems with bedtime- in fact, sometimes he goes to sleep before his bedtime!
I’m just so done and over my 3 year old running into my room every night and trying to sleep with me. I’ve officially spent an hour in his room tonight, sitting on his bed trying everything to get him to sleep. Even melatonin isn’t helping. I’m going to walk away in a minute and he’s going to be crying at my door because it’s locked and he can’t get in, then he’ll turn on the living room lights and play.. I don’t understand how or why he does this all the time. Every night is a struggle.

He's only so little once. I know its frustrating but he just wants your comfort. Giving melatonin can actually do the opposite of what you want when they're that young. It's not a good idea to mess with their natural balances 😪

Maybe you could rock him in a chair that you could close your eyes too. At least then you could rest. Not ideal but definitely working towards getting him to stay in his room. It’ll take some time. If he crawls in your bed take him back to his. It’s definitely not what you want to be doing at 33 weeks but will help in the long run. Good luck

Try diffusing lavender. You don’t have to get an expensive diffuser or oils, I don’t worry about it too much when I’m just using it for scent. But I don’t put cheap oils on topically. Anyways. Start the diffuser a bit before bed so by the time he goes to bed the room is filled with the smell. You can also get lavender pillow spray. Also, I use the app Moshi Twilight, it’s a sleep story app, and it’s fantastic! J was taking hours to go to sleep, now she’s asleep in 15-20min listening to it! I even sometimes listen to it on my own lol Very calming! There’s a free version where you can listen to a couple of the stories, but I eventually signed up for the yearly payment, cause it’s worth it for us!

This is the spray I’ve used many times

I wouldn’t be giving him melatonin, it’s more a habit you need to retrain him, it’s not that he isn’t tired. If you truly think he’s not tired then work on making him tired and filling his belly with lots of good food in the evening. Be stern with him- I love you, big boys go to sleep in their own beds, you need to stay there. We will play when you wake up tomorrow, now it’s time to sleep. And every time he gets out of his bed don’t say more than “it’s bedtime” and physically pick him up and put him back in. Don’t answer questions or talk much. An hour of that for a night maybe two will teach him. Don’t get mad at him, be patient and it will work. Gently reassure him you love him so much.
