I was just wondering if anyone on here has been diagnosed with depression? I think I’ve had it for a little over a year now and it’s getting harder to ignore/pretend it’s not there. I don’t think it’s PND as I’ve been feeling like this since before Harrison was born. I’ve made an appointment to see my doctor next week but I was just wondering what they can do for it? Do they give you medication or therapy or something? I do not like talking about my life or my feelings with anyone. I know it’s probably part of the problem but it’s just how I’ve always been. I’ve put off going to the doctor about it because I don’t want someone trying to get me to speak. Is anyone else like this?

I think ask your doctor what your options are. I went when my Lo was 1 and he simply gave me tablets and let me go, whereas I'd have probably preferred counselling or a referral to a class or gym class to force me to get out and physically work on myself.

I think it's becoming harder to refer to counselling because the money and the service just isn't there but if you can find an alternative it definitely helps alongside medication

I was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD at the age of 17 (11 years ago) due to years of childhood abuse. Did you have a trauma in your life around that time that you started feeling depressed? Because something will trigger it.

I tried a few different meds over the years but then I was referred to counselling! Like you I thought I'm not telling someone about my personal life etc.. but it was easier talking to that person that a family member. It also helped me clear my head of things and understand them more clearly.

I had cognitive behavioural therapy too which helped abit. I can't say I'm cured because I'm not and probably never will be but I have learned to cope with things better. There will be times when I have knockbacks but I know what to do and who to turn to if that happens.

I haven't had any medication for about 2 years now because I would rather deal with my feelings and know what I am feeling instead of them being hidden with antidepressants xx

Thank you. Last year wasn’t a very nice year for me as a few things happened. I thought when I had my wee boy it’d all be better but unfortunately I still feel the same. I’m so sorry that you’ve had to go through all that. I’m glad you’re in a better place now. I have really bad social anxiety and I really struggle to talk to people not in my circle so I know I wouldn’t like counselling. xx

I was first diagnosed in school at about 15 and have struggled since (24 now) that and anxiety. I’ve tried counselling multiple times but it’s never really worked for me, I also struggle to talk about stuff. I was on antidepressants and it did start to help but I didn’t like the side effects x

@kathleenc, I couldn’t “get there” if you catch my drift 😂 that’s a very common side effect x

I have and I was offered medication I took different ones over different periods of my life. I was also referred to counselling but I went the once and never went back it just made me feel worse and I was extremely uncomfortable. I was referred to a psychologist a few years later and was put on a different medication, I had a reaction to it and they gave me something else but I never took it I was fed up of having to rely on medication. So I think the point of me saying all of that is , it’s nothing to be ashamed of, counselling isn’t for everyone and medication can help but you don’t have to have it forever there is a chance you can feel better after xxx

Thanks. I definitely don’t think I’m a counselling type of person. xx
