I’m not sure of all requirements but he tells me when he poops he grabs at himself when I’m assuming he’s peeing and we recently had to switch to pull ups cause he wouldn’t leave diapers on

By letting the kid take the lead. If he isn't ready it won't work and will backfire on you.
