I don’t know what to do about my dad. We have been visiting his house for the past few months (with 2 months to go) and he of course compares my son to how my brother and I were as kiddos 35+ years ago. We were completely different children personality wise! My son is this endless ball of energy that is constantly climbing and just being very physical and active. He is speech delayed and not talking much (also has 3 languages spoken to him so that may contribute). Lately he seems to be attempting to say more words but it is still slow. Anyway.. I am not sure if it is the lack of being able to communicate or what but for like over a year when my son gets upset or we tell him no or sometimes if he gets scared by something he will drop down and bang his head. Typically this means hitting it on the floor but he sometimes just slams it into whatever is close. 🤦🏼♀️
It is super frustrating but no matter if we ignore him or stop him or move him at least to something softer (like carpeted floor vs linoleum on concrete) he continues to do it. Sometimes ending up with bruises on his forehead which I am not super fond of. My dad seems to think if we just let him continue to bang his head on whatever he will eventually learn it hurts and stop.. or something? So today my husband said my son’s name in the ‘you know you aren’t supposed to do that’ way and he got upset turned towards the wall and slammed his head into it. I was too far away and holding our daughter so I asked my dad (who literally was 2 feet from my son) to grab my son and move him so if he wanted to continue to bang his head he could do it on the carpet and my dad kinda flipped out on me and just went back to his room after basically saying he didn’t want to talk to me about it in a super frustrated and annoyed tone. Because it wouldn’t matter/change things I guess?
I just really don’t understand what I am supposed to do. I mostly ignore my son’s head banging as long as he is somewhere safe and not going to cause a ton of bruises (the carpeted floor still hurts if you slam your head on it..) but I do try to intervene if it is like a wall or hardwood floor, etc.
This isn’t a new behavior. My son isn’t ‘learning’ it hurts when he does it and then stopping. He seems to mostly be expressing his frustration? So yeah I just don’t get why my dad feels it is fine to let him slam his head into whatever hard object while just standing there and doing nothing? Just am not sure how to handle both the whole head banging thing in general and also feeling like my dad is judging me for being a bad parent. He already constantly makes comments about my son not talking which is irritating enough. 😩

Why are you visiting for 5 months. If you can't deal with your dad judging you just cut the trip short and go home.
From a professional stand point I have to say that your dad is right. If your son is in ABA or any similar therapy they will say to let it go. Your dad is right. Eventually he will hit it hard enough not to do it again. Right now he continues to do it because it gets his frustration attention from his parents

Personally I agree with your dad. My four year old did this and continued to do it until we stopped reacting either by pulling him away or verbally responding. For us it was him attention seeking. The more he did it the more attention he got.
If you aren't comfortable handling it that way maybe you could calmly explain or just keep your distance til he outgrows it. You could also put a helmet on him.
