Because he's used to being cradled in the womb and probably feels alone/unsecured when he's in the crib. Do you swaddle him? It might help him feel safer. A crib is a big open, empty, space for a newborn, especially when they're used to the tight, cramped, security of your uterus.

I usually swaddle him and then put him in the crib .. but not today I’m gonna do it

Maybe look into a bassinet option? My son would only sleep in a bassinet or co-sleeper for the first six months.
