Opinions on cloth diapers??
Are they easy to wash?
Is it easy to tell if they pee?
Will they hold pee long?
Are they bad for diaper rashes?
Never used them and have thought about it for a while. Also wondering if they are good at night my daughter fills up a diaper (Huggies) by morning and she’s wet when she wakes up and I hate waking her up to change her because she won’t go back to sleep she thinks it’s time to get up.
There’s a few kids at the daycare I work at that have cloth diapers and they wet through all the time even though we change them every 2 hours (unless they poop). It depends on how you clean them if you want the smell out, you have to use chemicals and wash them right away. One poor kiddo comes in smelling so strongly of pee everyday (honestly smells like cat pee but it’s just the diaper) that he gets changed right away. They’re better for the environment but money wise, I’d say it’s not worth the hassle you’ll have to put into it.
Tell that mama if you can that the diapers need to be stripped. There are "nonchemcial" ways of doing it but it's legit just the ammonia build up on the diaper. I end up doing an oxy clean soak every month with my son's diapers to get rid of any build up. I dont know how receptive she would be to that but I know the smell you are talking about and its rank. The second even bottled water touch them it starts.
I know it sucks to wake them to change them, but doing a consistent diaper change every night when I was going to bed was one thing I’ve noticed has been super helpful looking back. After a while my daughter would just sleep through them because it was a routine. For us as long as she hadn’t been asleep for over 4 hours she would go right back to sleeping normally. If I did it too late she was more likely to be confused and wake up a bit more. So much better than having a wet baby in the morning. I know your question was about cloth diapers and I have no experience there but I just wanted to suggest trying a routine nightly sleep change if you have a heavy wetter
Love them! It can be trial and error getting the right wash routine for your diapers and washer, but once you’ve got it it’s a breeze. No worse than any other laundry, in my opinion. We even have to pay for coin op where I am but it doesn’t cost us too much.
It’s a general rule to change every 2-3 hours regardless of pee (because there likely will be, but plenty of diapers have stay-dry linings so baby doesn’t feel wet). There’s not really a way to tell other than feeling for wetness. And of course, change as soon as you can for poop (same as disposables, in that sense.)
Some types of diaper inserts are better at holding pee than others, and it honestly depends on how much your baby pees.
The only diaper we’ve had “rashes” with were prefolds with covers. My son got awful wetness irritation. So we started stuffing the prefolds in pockets instead. We hardly ever see rashes anymore!
For nighttime, we don’t change. We have a combo that works for us overnight without leaks! Though that may change as my son gets older. We use a pocket diaper that’s extra stuffed. We have a few different options. My trimmest and favorite is a pocket stuffed with a Geffen quick absorber on top of a super absorber. Next, a stretchy flat padfolded and stuffed in a pocket. Lastly, also in a pocket, a bamboo insert on top of a cotton prefold. We only get leaks if we don’t make sure the fit is right before he goes down. He goes down at 7pm and is up at 6:30am. Diaper change going down, diaper change when he gets up. My son outpees a disposable but hardly ever manages to outpee his nighttime cloth.
I couldn’t imagine going back to disposables, honestly. But that’s my opinion. 😊
